New Roots Charter School Hosts Community Dinner

ITHACA, NY — How do you know when your kids are actually enjoying the homemade meal that you made just for them? When an entire cafeteria filled with almost one hundred students is silent — at lunchtime — eating their food. That’s when you know.

And New Roots wants to share the feast with you. Ithaca’s newest high school is serving up a second helping of its Spaghetti Dinner, the hearty American classic prepared by New Roots’ own head chef Allyn Rosenbaum.

On Wednesday, March 10, New Roots invites the public and greater Ithaca community to the second annual Farm to School Benefit to support the school’s meal program. Spaghetti Dinner will feature gluten-free pasta with vegetarian and meat sauce; bread, butter and salad; and blueberry-apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. Water, cider, coffee and tea will also be served.

The New Roots Farm to School Program is a creative and interactive part of the school day that involves students in preparing produce from local farms for daily lunches. As part of this program, all students gain the experience of applying academic studies to field experiences at West Haven Farm and other sustainable farms in the region, in addition to participating in school meal preparation and planning as part of their mentoring community experience.

The second annual Spaghetti Dinner takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Women's Community Building, located in Downtown Ithaca at 100 West Seneca Street. The all-you-can-eat buffet is $10 for general public, and $5 for kids age six to ten. Children under the age of five can eat for free. Please call 607-882-9220 and select extension 100 with questions.

Directly following the Spaghetti Dinner will be a Parent-Teen Information Night, hosted at New Roots Charter School, for interested students and families. Principal Tina Nilsen-Hodges will be joined by members of the New Roots faculty and current student body to answer questions. The PTIN will take place from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and registration is required. Please register by calling 607-882-9220 and selecting extension 100.

New Roots Public Charter School opened in downtown Ithaca on September 9, 2009. It is a tuition-free public high school that is open to any student eligible to attend high school in New York State. The school is now enrolling 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students for the 2010-11 school year, and there are even spaces left for students who wish to enroll in the current academic cycle.

As a model of sustainability education at the secondary level, the New Roots curriculum emphasizes active learning and community service. The Farm to School meals program is a primary feature of the culture of New Roots — one that allows students to understand intimately the relationship between human communities and economies, ecological systems, and personal wellness. More information about the Farm to School program is available at http://newrootsschool.org/content/view/farm-to-school.html. Funds raised at the Spaghetti Dinner will directly benefit the program.

As New Roots finishes its second trimester, the public charter high
school looks forward to rounding out a very successful first year. New
Roots is also looking further — to the coming academic year, when the
charter school will expand to incorporate an additional class of
students.

Currently serving 9th and 10th grade students who hail from 15
regional school districts, New Roots Charter School will grow 50
percent in its second year by adding an 11th grade. New Roots is now
enrolling 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students for the 2010-11 school
year, and invites interested families and prospective students to
visit the charter school at one of its weekly Parent-Teen Information
Nights.

Parent and Teen Information Nights give prospective students and their
families the opportunity to tour the school, meet and staff, and learn
first-hand from current students and parents why “Roots Rocks.” To
reserve their seat at a Parent and Teen Information Night, parents and
their teens — or community members who work with young people — can
call the school at 607-882-9220, extension 100.

Because New Roots is a public school, it is tuition-free and open to
any student eligible to attend a public school in New York State. More
details about Parent-Teen Information Nights, like dates and times,
are available on the New Roots Web site at www.newrootsschool.org.

New Roots Students Take Action in Ithaca Community

Wednesday afternoons at New Roots High School are different. When classes end at 2:30, there’s still two hours left in the school day, but students have left the building. And they’re off!

In fact, Wednesday afternoons are not at New Roots. Instead, students of Ithaca’s new charter high school take this time for short field trips to volunteer throughout the community as part of their weekly Service Learning program.

Learning through service work is an ever-steady academic staple at New Roots, and the possibilities are growing. As New Roots begins its third trimester and students continue on-going Service Learning projects, they’re also delving into new projects.

This spring, in addition to teaching technology to seniors and reading to children, New Roots students will learn about park stewardship, community gardening, and combating racism.

To that end, students will participate in Talking Circles on Race and Racism, a dialogue coordinated by the Multicultural Resource Center that allows people the opportunity for frank, respectful conversations about race and racism. Talking Circles provide a floor for self-reflection, sharing experiences, and influencing others’ perspectives and attitudes.

Students will also work as a traveling garden crew to support the many local gardens of downtown Ithaca and beyond — all while learning gardening skills and making affordable, locally-grown, healthy food available to our neighbors.

New Roots is creating a park stewardship team to help keep the Town of Ithaca parks and trails safe, clean and protected. These students will have the chance to spend time outside and fully engaged in local park maintenance.

More information about New Roots’ Service Learning Program is available online at www.newrootsschool.org, along with details and descriptions about the other projects in which students are involved. New Roots is located in Downtown Ithaca in the Historic Clinton House on North Cayuga Street. The community is encouraged to contact New Roots at 607-882-9220, extension 100.

New Roots Showcase Demonstrates School's Success

New Roots Public Charter High School will welcome the community to join students, parents, faculty, and staff for a Showcase on Friday, May 7. The school will celebrate a host of cross-disciplinary projects and other student accomplishments.

In the third trimester of a successful first year, New Roots has plenty to show off, including projects from the tenth-grade learning expedition about city and regional planning, and a debate by the Debate Team on the question, “Should all schools be Expeditionary Learning schools?”

The Rock Ensemble has been practicing covers of famous rock and roll songs for a special Showcase performance, and student artists have been working on painting the school mural — on display in the lobby. Guests will be treated to all-natural refreshments prepared by students as part of their Farm to School meals program.

The Showcase will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at New Roots Charter School, located in the Historic Clinton House in Downtown Ithaca at 116 North Cayuga Street.

New Roots is a public charter school now enrolling 9th, 10th, and 11th graders for the 2010-11 academic year. More information about Ithaca’s newest high school is available online at www.newrootsschool.org. More information about the Showcase is available by calling New Roots at 607-882-9220, extension 100 or by emailing info@newrootsschool.org.
