Alive Beneath a Blanket of Snow:
LIGHT IN WINTER EVENT AT CORNELL PLANTATIONS
Ithaca, NY---Winter is a season of wonder and beauty! Dress warmly and bring the whole family to Cornell Plantations on Sunday, January 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon to learn about the amazing natural phenomena that can abound under a protective winter blanket of snow and soil. Meet Mr. Mole and learn how mice, voles and shrews stay active all winter. Identify plant rosettes, bulbs and other forms of over-wintering plant life. Discover how insects and other creatures have adapted to survive the cold, and how changes in our climate and snowfall could have a large effect on life in winter.
Special guests will include Cornell professor David Wolfe, author of "Tales from the Underground," who will talk about our changing winter world, and Cornellís Snodgrass and Wigglesworth Undergraduate Entomology Club, whose fun presentation will show how insects survive the cold. Verne Rockcastle, professor emeritus of science education, will demonstrate the unique phenomenon of winter, and naturalist Linda Spielman will explain how snow helps small mammals survive. Indoor talks include: "The Uniqueness of Winter" (10:15 am); "Climate Change Impacts on Gardens, Farms, and Forests" (11 am); and "Mammals in Winter" (11:45 am).
"Alive Beneath a Blanket of Snow" will take place in Cornell Plantations' Botanical Garden area and in the Lewis Education Center, located at One Plantations Road on the Cornell Campus. Please dress in preparation for being both outside and inside. This free program is presented as part of Ithacaís "Light in Winter" celebration (<http://www.lightinwinter.com/>www.lightinwinter.com), and is sponsored by the Triad Foundation.
Cornell Plantations ( www.plantations.cornell.edu) is the arboretum, botanical garden, and natural areas of Cornell University, and is a member of Ithaca's Discovery Trail partnership (<http://www.discoverytrail.com/>www.discoverytrail.com ). Plantations is open to the public free of charge during daylight hours. Free parking is available.
