If you use an email address that you actually check when you register (highly recommended), you can click "watch this topic" at the bottom and the forum will email you if someone replies .... you can watch other topics too .. even ones someone else started! 
Also when you register set "Notify on new Private Message:" to YES and the system will email you if a friend is trying to contact you through the board.
