There is snow and ice on the trails and the trees. About 2-4″ Hopefully it will melt off the trees before Sunday. But I think in general, we’ve had enough biking for the season. From now on; plan on the Sunday outings being a HIKE interspersed with light trail work. We’ll carry one tool each but try to keep moving along …

Four of us hiked tonight in snowy blustery conditions. Not super cold, but windy and snowy. There is about 3 or 4 inches on the ground now in the open … less in the forest. Sunday when we walked and did trail work, things looked great - I was thinking “wow - not much work to get ready for ski season” … but tonight changed that outlook. There are still a lot of small trees with leaves; weighted down with wet, sticky, heavy snow, these were bending down into the trails and the taller ones are pulling dead stuff down with them … yeesh what a mess. We won’t know for sure how bad till the snow melts off and the trees spring back up .. but it was like walking a maze tonight. I tried to get a pic but my camera battery died … I used my cell phone to take this one; you can see the snow in the background. No hike Thursday, but I think Sunday we will hike again and do more trail work! See you then?
Hike this week: Tue only. Rain or “shine”. Bring a headlamp and a raincoat! If you’re not on the email list, send me a hello! :-)

After a bit of a late start we headed up Canaan Rd armed with trail tools. Up Y7 where there is a log we will need a saw [or axe anyone?] for at some future outing. Then around the Y5 trail and R2 up to Radio tower. The alternate red trail used in the winter only is going to need some serious weed whacking due to bramble build-up. It is the best choice in the winter, but we ignore it in the summer becase there’s a bit of a swamp at the bottom. Nice day for a hike!
Well. The trails are ’sopping’ as David suggested they might be and it is 30 degrees out now at 7:30 am. So, we will HIKE. BUT to make it more interesting - let’s do some light trail work as we hike to begin to tidy things up for xc-ski season. I have some basic hand tools here. But, bring your favorite clippers, saw or earth tool [ hoe etc., for cleaning water bars ] if you have one … see you at 11:00 am! PS - it will warm up as soon as the sun breaks over the hill :-)

I am already getting inquiries about the Sunday outing which is usually a bike ride - if the truck trails, fireroads and side trails are soppy with rain and wet leaves: will we hike instead? Yes. So, be prepared for either, or check here or your email Sunday morning - I will decide then. More feedback welcome! -m :-)
WEATHER OUTLOOK http://www.wunderground.com/US/NY/Ithaca.html
Nice evening for a night hike. We explored the snowmobile trail and found quite a lot of erosion from rainstorm damage on the steep part coming down the hill near Harford Rd. I was playing with different looks for this web space. What do you think? The header pic is taken near Y5 where it crosses the truck trail [Canaan Rd] looking south. Does the little field in the top center look familiar?
Mike, Bianca, and Marilyn hiked on Tuesday evening 10.21.08 with 3 dogs. It was a first on two counts: Leaving about a bout 6:35 pm, it was the first time this season we all turned our headlamps on at the beginning of the hike. Also, it was arguably the first snow of the season at the higher elevations. There was an honest to goodness steady snow with some white stuff sticking to the leaves. It was a bit chilly and reminded us that winter is around the corner.
Mike took a few pictures and hopefully he will post them.
