Third Annual!
West End Waterfront Rhiner Festival
Expands to Three Days
September 23 - 25, 2011
This year's theme: On Location in the Rhine.
The year is 1916. The Wharton Bros Studios churn out 30 serial films and 3 additional features! One of these serials is the beloved Beatrice Fairfax series, starring Grace Darling as Miss Fairfax, an advice columnist turned crime-fighter (think Nancy Drew meets the Scooby team.) But war is in Europe and on the minds of Americans, including the Wharton Brothers, and they try to stir patriotic feelings with the thrilling espionage film, Patria, starring Irene Castle. Both films are being shot in the Rhine at the same time, and nothing can proceed without the support of Bogey Bowlsby, the 'unofficial mayor' of Silent City.
IS the smuggling and espionage only for show?
WILL the stormy romance between silver screen pair Wellington Playter and Evelyn Farris destroy Episode 15?
WHO will help solve the mysteries of On Location in the Rhine???
Find out all of this and more, at the Third Annual West End Waterfront Rhiner Festival!
Presented by The Waterfront District Association and The History Center in Tompkins County, the Rhiner Festival is a weekend event celebrating the bad old days of Ithaca's Waterfront District, an area once referred to as The Rhine.
Festival Highlights: On Friday, the event begins with welcome party at the Rhine House from 6-9pm followed by a Past Meets Future Dance party with DJ Cappel.
On Saturday, visit Inlet Island to find music, games for kids, magicians, jugglers, fortune tellers, belly dancers, free boat rides, and a live mystery street theater that unfolds in 5 scenes from 1 to 5pm. Scenes take place in the 'Fisherman's Wharf' located in front of Castaways, the Ithaca Boating Center, and the Moonlight Dance Studio.Watch the scenes, look for clues, talk to the characters and try to guess whodunnit: One lucky sleuth will receive a very special prize. Saturday from 5-7 offers a rendition of Watermusic, where musicians set up in unusual spots around the Inlet and Cayuga Waterfront Trail, and over at the Ithaca Farmer's Market, check out the Annual Farmer's Ball from 5:30 to 10pm. Bring a dish to pass and table setting and dance the night away to the Evil City Stringband. (free.)
To help get you back and forth, the Tiohero Tour boat will offer free shuttle rides from Steamboat Landing to Inlet Island from 2pm to 10pm. Saturday concludes with the 3rd annual Moonshine Island Speakeasy Party at Castaways ($5 for those wearing 1920s attire, $8 for wet blankets) featuring live vaudeville and burlesque shows, games of chance, and music by Jessie Carolina and the Hot Mess.
Sunday's festivities include brunch in the Rhine and a day of antiquing at FOUND in Ithaca who will offer a day long antiques fair. Bring your brunch receipt from Kelly's Dockside Cafe, The Boatyard Grill or the MV Columbia Brunch Bruise to receive a free gift at FOUND in Ithaca on Sunday. The Ithaca Children's Garden will also offer a Fall Fairy Garden Workshop and tours of the Children's Garden. Check our website for times.
So mark your calendar and save the date for the weekend of September 23rd, when history meets mystery, and you might just wind up bumping into a silent film star or two, when the cast and crew arrive on 'Moonshine Island' to film their latest production.
