For me, Sunday evenings would work best. There's so many things going on in Ithaca Friday and Saturday's.

Friday is better for me for bluegrass jam though other nights could work. We don't get done to late. Thank u for all u do on this.

I’m probably not one to talk...But...I haven’t been able to get over because I’m playing so many Fridays & Saturdays that, when I get one off I try to do some family things... I think earlier in the week or even a Sunday afternoon might increase attendance... Fridays & Saturdays are tough on working musicians...

I’d love to attend the jam on a more regular basis, but Friday is often date night with the wife and being a father of 2 often times it’s hard to get out of the house any earlier than 7-7:30. If the jam were on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and started at 7 or 7:30 I think you’d attract a lot more of the family men and women who have to attend to youngin’s before going out. Thanks!

As for ideas to what days and times work for the currently idle bluegrass jam, I have a few thoughts.

Friday was always somewhat difficult for me, especially starting at 6:30 pm. However, some have suggested Sunday afternoons, but I have found that at least 3 out of 4 Sunday afternoons a month are tied up in some family activity. Others I have talked to have the same issue with Sunday. Saturdays may be worse.

That pretty much leaves Monday through Thursday, with me favoring a Tuesday or Thursday (with 7:00 to 9:00 pm being ideal).

One key factor needed for the jam to work is to have a leader or leaders regularly attending. (I am not a good choice for this!) This should be someone with a good grasp on bluegrass music that can redirect the group if the jam takes a turn away from bluegrass or falls out of timing, tuning, etc.

My wife and I have finished out our work careers and will be more available for a jam at Longview or elsewhere and the day of the week will matter less. Snow and bad weather will still keep us home though. This summer we are hard at the festival trail with Busy Bird then Grey Fox,etc. so we are happy with a hold for Longview until the fall but we will definitely participate then..

We would like to see normal BG jamming rules and etiquette in place though. There has been a tendency at the jam for a very few individuals to take it over. In fairness I will say that some of it is because most participants don't pick out songs and lead the song. I am guilty of this at times myself.

I would love attend the Longview Bluegrass Jam but I gig every Friday and Saturday night.

Have rehearsal on Tuesdays evenings.

For me Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Sunday evening would work?

I think Sunday would be a better day but what I would like to suggest is two-fold:

1. Make the jams longer. Two hours is not enough. I used to drive there from Corning (I now live in Elmira) and my drive time was longer than the actual time I had to jam! I understand the time restraints both from the fact of people getting off work and the residents' bed time.

2. I would like the Sunday jams at Stewart Park or other venue to be considered. I know the weather poses problems but I like having the park in the spring through fall and the retirement center in the winter. Oh maybe you could alternate venues or something.

I do like playing for the folks at Longview. I know they like it and look forward to it so I don't want that to stop.

Another possibility would be a library. I go kind of regularly to Danielle's acoustic jam (which is not just bluegrass) now being held Saturdays at the Vestal Library. It used to be a four-hour jam on Sundays but the library is closed on Sundays due to budget restraints so it's now three hours on a Saturday. The drive is even a little b it longer but I like having the third hour and sometimes we stay a few minutes past.

If not Friday's, I guess I vote for Wednesday eve's.

Ref: 'Three hour LongView Bluegrass jam'.

I appreciate the enthusiasm, and it's a great idea if turn-out was large enough to support it. 3 hours of music with only two or three people (that don't know each other or haven't jammed together more than once or twice a year) might be a stretch. 2 hours has been tough with only 2 people.

I did enjoy the Stuart Park jams in the summer, but the Longview thing has a great audience and is consistent. That's my 2 cents.

Friday eves are not good. We know that.

I'm thinking Sunday afternoons from say, 2 - 4PM, OR Sunday eves from 6:30 - 8:30.

2 - 4PM gives people time to get other things done, including church if they are church goers. 6:30 - 8:30PM is a familiar time frame for everyone and might be a nice way to cap off a weekend.

What do YOU guys think??

Hi All,

I was reading through the possible times and wanted to let you know the schedule for Sundays. We have a worship service from 2:00-3:00PM on Sundays and the chapel is not far from the auditorium. I would hate for either program to disrupt the other. Sunday evenings are typically open. We do have a program or two scheduled in the coming months. Monday and Thursday evenings are typically open as well.

Please let me know your thoughts once you've discussed them.

I hope you're enjoying the end of summer!

Best,
Bree

Mike,

if you remember back when the jams ceased I recommended to you that the jams be at least 3 hours long. Here are my points on the new time slot

1) I think Sunday night will be better than Friday because generally you don't have to contend with people getting off work, shopping for the weekend, going out on dates, etc. However, I think Sunday night poses a problem with it inteferring with family night at many households. I still think Sunday afternoon is a lot better. although there is conflict with tv football. For one, players won't have to travel home in the dark.

Bluegrass jams at other places are generally on Sunday afternoons such as the Southern Tiers Bluegrass Association's monthly event in Addison from about 1 to 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. and the one over at Canandigua. A jam used to be held in Wellsboro, Pa., and that was also from 2 p.m. to whenever.

2) My main thing is two hours: That to me is not enough time. As I said I will be coming from Elmira so my travel time to and from may actually surpass my playing time. Also it's just too narrow. If some body knows he or she will be say 30 minutes late or may have to leave 30 minutes early they may not come at all. A three hour session allows enough time that if you will b e late or have to leave early you still will have a good amount of time to play.

Just my thoughts

Bluegrass jam is back! This Sunday 6:30-8:30 Oct 2nd at Longview

The regular Ithaca Bluegrass jam at Longview is BACK! New day of the week: Sunday evenings every other week, beginning Oct 2nd. This coming Sunday evening! 6:30-8:30 pm

DIRECTIONS - From downtown Ithaca you'll want to head up the hill towards Ithaca College. Less than a mile beyond the main entrance for Ithaca College (which will be on your left), you will see a driveway and a sign on your right for Longview. There is a visitor parking lot at the end of the driveway; all the way to the end past the entrance. If you go in the main entrance, the jam is held in an entertainment room down the main hallway and to the left. All skill levels are welcome: the goal is to keep it pure bluegrass.

Re Longview BG jam
Michael, I am reluctant to bring this to you as I know you are not"in charge' but simply publish the wonderful list of musical activities
but sunday was heartbreaking at Longview, 60 folks, tired, wheelchair bound, but all music lovers assembled to see the Longview Bluegrass jam.
Having had a less than pleasant experiance of being the only person at this event on 2 pervious occasions and having to perform for 2 hours solo I have decided to never be "the only one' again
so Elena,my non playing wife, and I arrived at 6:15, we sat in our car to see whom else would be arriving. Well no one came, at 6:30 Elena went inide to see if we had 'just missed everyone" and was driven to tears by the foolks assembled for this event that NO MUSICIANS showed up for. I don't know who schedules this jam but it is very unfair to the residents of Longview to have them anticipate and look forward, then assemble to enjoy a night of music that the organizers completly disrespect by not being there. it was heartbreaking, but I am not a singer, nor even a very good player and was not going to face a crowd expecting to be entertained alone, AGAIN. if you have info on whom is scheduling this event can you have them become aware of the dissapointment in the hearts of the residents of longview? Perhaps this jam is dead and needs to be taken off the list of scheduled events
again sorry I have had to bring this to your attention but I really did not know where to go

In response to this experiance I have contacted my playing circle in Oswego and pennYan and I am going to deliver to longview residents a night where they will be able to share in the music from me andmy friends whop will gather to bring a little joy into their lives , for at least one noght,I will keep you appraised as this developes

Hi All,

We'll give it another go on the 16th. I wanted to reiterate to the residents that this jam session is a practice and if no pickers show up by 7:00PM we will show an evening movie. Here is how the schedule reads:

6:30 BLUEGRASS JAM ‘til 8:30– Auditorium

(If no Bluegrass Pickers show by 7:00PM – we will be having an evening movie.

As a reminder, the Bluegrass Jam is a volunteer group that practices in our auditorium bi-weekly.)

Thanks,
Bree
Events Coordinator at Longview

The Longview Bluegrass Jam is back on a NEW night! 6:30-8:30 every 2 weeks Sundays nights. Bluegrass only. This coming Sunday evening Oct 16th. The first Sunday jam was poorly attended. Above is a comment sent in by one of the attendees. We do have a Facebook page for this group; if you want you can go there and let folks know you are attending (safety in numbers sort of thing) https://www.facebook.com/groups/59418231754/
