2010 New Years Eve Dance at Bethel Grove - open band

For the musicians; this is an open band. Kathy Selby is band leader. Here is a message from her to the "core" group. With an event like this, there is often a core group, so as not to leave it to random chance! Smile

Facebook event http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=181333965227772

===//===

I'm putting together some tunes sets for New Year's Eve which use only YFN tunes. We may also use non-YFN tunes, depending on who shows up to play, but these sets will be ready in case we have a crowd of folks who need to use the YFN book.

Marches

Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine (D) / Campbells' Farewell to Redgap (A mix) / The Meeting of the Waters (D)
Farewell to Whiskey (G) / The Rose Tree I (D) / March of St. Timothy (G)
Jamie Allen (G) / Riding On A Load Of Hay (Edor) / Redwing (G)
Road To Boston (D) / Mairie's Wedding (*D* maj - start on an "A" note) / Jenny's Gone To Linton (A)
Golden Slippers (G) / Jay Bird (D)

Jigs

Haste to the Wedding (D) / Smash The Windows (D) / Off She Goes (D)
Indian Point (Em) / Tenpenny Bit (A dor) / The Connachtman's Rambles (D/Bm)
The Kesh Jig (G) / Swallowtail Jig (E dor) / Yurt in the Meadow (D)
Maison de Glace (D) / Out on the Ocean (G) / My Darling Asleep (D)
Road To Lisdoonvarna (Em) / Bellman's Jig (G) / Little Burnt Potato (D)
The Sailor's Wife (D dor) / Calliope House (D) / The Hundred Pipers (A)

All the above tunes are available at http://canaaninstitute.org/mn/mus_tuneset.html Some of them are in the "YFN supplements" lists. THANKS, MIKE!

Reels

I'll send reel sets tomorrow.

English dance tunes (from Pamela)

Childgrove (Dm)
Female Saylor (Dm)
Mad Robin (Bb)
The Mulberry Garden (Dm)

These are all in Barnes Book I. The versions of Childgrove and Female Saylor in the YFN collection are different, so let's use Barnes on New Years'. If you need a copy of any of these, I can email you a pdf.

Waltzes

Bring your waltz books! Let me know if you have favorites.

Schottisches

Shottis Fran Idre (D/Dm)
Svensk Shottis #2 (D)
Rochester Schottische #2 (D)

These are all in A Little Couple Dancemusik. If you need a copy of any of these, I can email you a pdf.

Polkas

Jenny Lind (D/G)
Year of the Jubilo (D) - "Alternate version" in YFN (p.4Cool
Bill Sullivan's (A)

All in YFN.

Hambos

Fjallnas (D)
Hargaluten (Gm)

In A Little Couple Dancemusik.

"Chestnut" contras

Bring The New England Fiddlers' Repertoire book if you have it.

I know that this looks like a lot of tunes already! We won't need them all. I'm just making sets and trying them out so we aren't scrambling during the walk-throughs to find tunes that go together in sets.

Cheers, Kathy

Cheers, Kathy

2011 New Years Eve Dance at Bethel Grove - open band
Band leader: Kathy Selby

Pamela may call some of these English dances:
Childgrove
Juice of Barley
Lovers' Knot
Mad Robin

and she may call Golden Slippers as a singing square.

I've attached sheet music for all of these.

Note that Juice of Barley is played ABB.

Golden Slippers will also need a different repeat structure than we're used to:

4 measure intro

Then repeat the following for the dance:
{
8 measure A part
8 measure A part
8 measure B part (that's half our usual B part)
}

End the dance with a 4 measure tag.
Cheers, Kathy

More sheet music and set list

OK ... Here is all the "weird" (non-typical YFN) tunes for Saturday night.
Click this link and you will see a list of PDF files. Some redundant, sorry.

http://canaaninstitute.org/mn/yfn/2011_12_31_Open_Band_Bethel_Grove/

To find ALL YFN sheet music from scratch you can go to my home page
http://www.canaaninstitute.org/

Then click on "folk music" or "music calendar"
http://canaaninstitute.org/mn/musicnt.htm

Then in the left column click on "Sheet Music" and see info to find YFN tunes.

If you are a serious musician and want copies of the tune books, I have all the Barnes and Miller books at Canaan Rd for sale. -m

PostPosted: Thu Dec 29, 2011 2:30 pm    Post subject: The chords for Childgrove Reply with quote

Hello Mike,

The chords for Childgrove in the YFN supplement are different than those in the transcription I sent you (which came from Barnes Book I). Both would work fine, but we need to decide which version to use, since they will clash with each other (C vs. Gmin is going to be NASTY!) I personally like the flavor of the Barnes chords.

Here they are:

|: Dm | Dm | Gm | Am | Dm | Dm | Gm Am | Dm :|
|: F | C | Dm | A | F | Gm | Dm A | Dm :|

I have printed 9 copies of each of the four ECD tunes, and also Golden Slippers, to bring to the dance.

Cheers, Kathy

I just added some sheet music to this folder: http://canaaninstitute.org/mn/yfn/2011_12_31_Open_Band_Bethel_Grove/

The tunes with "2013" in the filename are new this year for 2012-13 event.

Also you should scroll up and read some of the other notes from last year. We will use the version of Child Grove that is in YFN.
