The Common Railers sound ranges from more traditional folk and bluegrass, to singer-songwriter, pop and americana. Playing harmony-infused funky Americana rock, acoustic pop, alt-country and the occasional stray old-time tune, the most common adjective used to describe The Small Kings music is 'fun'. Jeff McCaffrey (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Mike Levy (bass, ukele, vocals), Frank Raponi (guitar, harmonica, banjo, vocals) and Joel Blizzard (drums) play together seamlessly, like an experienced basketball team: they can pass and catch the ball without eye contact and they have each others backs. The positive friction between the four band members adds a playful spark to their music. Simultaneously melodic, upbeat and groovy, most of their songs are originals, with their sound being compared to the likes of Rufus Wainright, Crosby and Stills (no Nash), Neal Diamond and Ben Folds, with Bootsie Collins and Grateful Dead influences peeking through as well. Their first full-length cd, Eating Oranges After Dark, was released in November 2008.

The Bernie Upson Trio will be joined on 11/23 by a number of musical guests (and a birthday cake) to celebrate his 75th birthday. Bernie is the most outstanding jazz musician in Ithaca, and renowned nationally for his talent on the upright bass. Harlem native Bernie Upson has played upright bass professionally since the late 1950's. His activities included Apollo appearances with such diverse artists as Marvin Gaye and Richie Havens and tours across Africa and Europe with Illinois Jacquet and the Mamma Lue Parks Dancers. Not to mention he's one of the kindest and sweetest musicians to cross the Felicia threshold. A staff fave. Besides special guests (I'll let you know as I find out the guests), the trio will include:

Felicia has lost her mind and decided to open at *10am* on Black Friday 11/23, selling housemade muffins, breakfast sandwiches, morning cocktails, and holiday gifts from Tree Gate Farm and other local folks. Drinks will include mimosas, hot spiked cider, doorbuster tequila shots, the cranhattan, eggnogg martinis, holiday spiked coffee, and more. Seek refuge from the crowds with Felicia! The Doorbuster Party will be followed by Bernie Upson's 75th Birthday Party and happy hour music with the Bernie Upson Trio, and our regular nightly antics.
