WHAT MAKES GOOD DANCE MUSIC
Andrew & Noah VanNorstrand
Do you know that moment when the dance and the music and the energy in the hall are all in perfect sync? This class will cover different aspects of what makes that moment happen - what makes good dance music. Most of the discussion will interest both dancers and musicians and will be shaped by the questions and interests of the participants.
Some topics that we may touch on are:
Picking the Perfect Tune
Music Not Fit for Reading
Practical Music Theory: Tension and Dynamics
Exploring the Outer Limits of Dance Music
Thinking Like a Dancer
We can explore timing, improvisation, harmonies and chords, repertoire and composition, communication on stage, developing creative arrangements of common tunes.
This workshop is a two-hour taste of a week-long course at Andrew & Noah will present at Pinewoods (the nationally-known CDSS music and dance camp). It has been well received at various dance weekends over the past few years. Come learn to connect the dots between the dance and the music!

TUNESCAPE IN BINGHAMTON
Tunescape fearlessly explores the border between traditional music and modern groove. Their music is wildly varied, borrowing from nearly every dance music tradition imaginable and fusing it spontaneously into a colorful sound that is “relentlessly inventive” - a healthy dose of world beat percussion, occasional jazz licks, and a cowbell when you least expect it. Tunescape’s infectious energy, driving rhythm, and sense of humor have delighted dancers and concert audiences throughout the northeast since 2005.
This exciting band will be in Binghamton on Saturday, September 17, 2011 when they will do a musician's workshop in the afternoon, and a contradance in the evening. The schedule is:
3:30 Workshops (choose one):
Melody instrument workshop
Backup instrument workshop
Percussion workshop (including foot percussion)
4:30 Break
4:45 Joint workshop for all instruments
5:45 Break (Dinner on your own)
7-10 pm Contradance, with Nancy Spero calling
Dance admission $7 - age 25 and under are FREE (with ID)
The workshops will use one or two simple tunes to develop ideas about texture, improvisation, and arrangement for contra dance use. The first set of workshops will address topics unique to each category of instrument, and the second workshop will bring all instruments together to work on a band sound and arrangement. Participants will be invited to sit in with Tunescape for a tune at the evening contra dance.
To register for the afternoon workshops, please email Hilton Baxter (hiltonb@binghamton.edu) by Sept 15, 2011. Attendance at the workshop Workshop admission is $5 and includes admission to the evening dance for free.
Location: Trinity Church, Oak St just north of Main (see www.binghamtondance.org/trinity.htm )
This project is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Chenango County Council of the Arts. Additional funding provided by the Hoyt Foundation. _________________ Michael Ludgate - forum administrator

This message is to confirm that Trinity Church has not been affected by recent floods. Saturday's music workshops and contradance will take place as scheduled (see below for details). But please let us know if you have suffered damage.
Unfortunately, much of downtown Owego has had a lot of flood damage, therefore the contradance in Owego this Sunday , September 18, has been canceled. Contact Stu Johnson at (607) 687-4034 for more information.
After such a difficult week, dancing to some great music will be a welcome diversion. Hope to see you this Saturday! Hilton Baxter

Notes Inégales will be playing high energy dance tunes with Megan Ludgate and Hilton Baxter calling this EARLY dance from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm at Trinity Memorial Church in Binghamton NY. Don't miss this celebration of the roots of New England folk dance! This is an authentic Old New England style venue! Bring clean shoes, a water bottle and YOUR FRIENDS! All dances taught, No partner needed. Admission: $7- Students with ID $3-. PARKING: plenty of free parking behind the church. This will be a fun DANCE PARTY featuring "Notes Inégales"; Ethan Jodziewicz (guitar, bass, banjo and feet) and Andrea Katz (fiddle) along with Mike Ludgate (mandolin) and Eric Anderson (keyboard) http://www.notesinegales.org/
Central NY dancers are lucky to have two new contra dance musicians now living in the ITHACA area, both are students starting their second semesters here. Ethan Jodziewicz (bass, guitar, banjo, mandolin and feet) is studying double bass performance at Ithaca College. Ethan is from Washington state, where he often plays with his band The Retrospectacles. Andrea Katz (from Texas on playing fiddle) is a PhD candidate in applied physics at Cornell University. Andrea played in a variety of contra dance bands in the San Antonio area and has studied with Jay Ungar and David Kaynor. Both are fantastic contra dance musicians and are playing a dance with Ithaca contra musician and music promoter Michael Ludgate under the new band name Notes Inégales. This will be an exceptionally fun dance! http://www.notesinegales.org/
About the band name: "Notes Inégales" (pronounced notes inagall) contra dance band http://www.notesinegales.org/ -- "In music, notes inégales (French: unequal notes) refers to a performance practice, mainly from the Baroque and Classical music eras, in which some notes with equal written time values are performed with unequal durations, usually as alternating long and short. The practice was especially prevalent in France in the 17th and 18th centuries, with appearances in other European countries at the same time; and it reappeared as the standard performance practice in the 20th century in jazz." source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notes_in%C3%A9gales http://www.notesinegales.org/

MORE INFORMATION About Contra Dancing:
WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST DANCE Contra dancing is easy to learn. It's so easy to learn that you don't take lessons. Just show up at a dance and by the end of the first night you'll have learned all the dance moves and you will be able to enjoy the next dance even more. People are friendly and welcoming to beginners. The age range is from kids to folks that have been around for a while. Both singles and doubles come to contra dances and women as well as men ask people to dance. It is usual that you change partners after every dance. You will meet people in a relaxed, pleasant, smoke and alcohol free atmosphere. The patterns of the dance can be a tad confusing at first but remember everyone had a first time and that other dancers will help you. Listen to the caller and the music and go with the flow of the dance. Some people find they get dizzy at first. Looking directly at the person you are dancing with eliminates this sensation. For many, the music is what keeps them coming back as it is exciting and lively. People come to dance, hear the music, socialize and have a good time.
WHAT TO WEAR? Wear smooth soled shoes and comfortable light weight clothing. Some halls require non-street shoes so make sure the soles of shoes aren't bringing grit onto the dance floor. Most people bring a bottle of drinking water. Contra dancing is joyous so it's important that you bring a smile. Adapted from http://www.greatmeadowmusic.com/music.html

NPR: Youth Flock To Contra Dancing -- Contra dancing has been around since the 1700s. If you don't know it -- it's kind of like square dancing but with long lines of dancers. The dance is having a renaissance around the country thanks to a thriving youth scene and incredibly lively acoustic music.
