Dear Friends,

The comments that have been posted are heartfelt and thoughtful. I wish it hadn't unfolded that way, but the reality is that's the norm for that jam. I don't know the specifics behind the jam being on Sunday evenings, but that doesn't seem to work any better than Friday did. We all have busy lives, and it's impossible to meet every one's needs all the time. For instance, I have to be home Sunday evening's, as my 10 year old daughter has school the next morning.

Regarding this Sunday's jam, for what it's worth I'll be there. My buddy is coming along (but he isn't too familiar w bluegrass) and will play some rhythm. If you're nervous about being solo up there, no need to worry about that this weekend! Come one, come all. If you're not a singer, then I'll sing every song if I have to (the folks hearing isn't what it used to be - so they'll be ok) , just come do what you can do. I will say, that if I am alone up there entertaining (60 people? That's AMAZING!!) all those people for two hours, I'll need to play something other than 'just' bluegrass. I don't have 2 hours of bluegrass up my sleeve, so come help out! You don't want me to disgrace the bluegrass jam with some old twangy Hank Williams Sr tune, or something Gospel do ya? I didn't think so. =) See you there!

KennyT

There is some irony here. My wife and I have retired so Friday would have been fine for us now, whereas Friday was difficult and a mad scramble last year. In winter months the weather sometimes made it difficult to get to Longview from over by Greek Peak but we did try.

We'd love to attend a few jams but almost every jam in CNY is now on Sunday, with the exception of Marcellus which is well attended every Friday night. Frankly this time of year I love Sundays at home. There is football, family, and friends. All I can assume is that the Bluegrassers who set up these times have little interest in Football and what we consider the "family"day. When we saw that Sunday evenings were chosen we made a collective sigh. It is just too precious a time slot for us.

Since we are retired we could have a jam any weekday and even have a mid week, mid-day jam. I realize that would be impossible for many musicians who we'd love to have join us in a jam but I've often thought it would be nice if there was a casual jam on a weekday afternoon. No need to hurry. If anyone is interested in this let me know and we can try to arrange a get together at a house. Also, I realize that there are many different situations out there but I would hate to see this Longview jam die because of the time slot chosen. There have been some greatmusical moments along the way and the audience seemed to really enjoy us. It's great practical experience for anyone who wants to get comfortable playing in front of an audience.

Speaking for ourselves, we will still try to make it occasionally if the time chosen remains the same but if a weekday evening on say Tues. Wed, or Thursday we'd be able to make it more consistently. I know that my priorities have changed and this would likely be bad for others but why not email out a survey to all and let them decide again. Maybe this was already done to arrive at the current time, but, given the attendance it seems a revisit is in order.

"We had a modest number of pickers at the jam Sunday (Oct 30th) - enough to get the job done, but there's plenty of room for more! The more pickers we have, the more new tunes that will get played as people think of neat stuff we haven't done! We ALL can learn! Please come join in on Nov 13th!! Let's keep the momentum going!"

The Longview Bluegrass Jam is back on a NEW night! 6:30-8:30 every 2 weeks Sundays nights. Bluegrass only. This coming Sunday evening Nov 13

The 2nd and 3rd jams had much better attendance. We do have a Facebook page for this group; if you want you can go there and let folks know you are attending (safety in numbers sort of thing) https://www.facebook.com/groups/59418231754/ Oh! And there is a photo there that KennyT sent in ...

DIRECTIONS - From downtown Ithaca you'll want to head up the hill towards Ithaca College. Less than a mile beyond the main entrance for Ithaca College (which will be on your left), you will see a driveway and a sign on your right for Longview. There is a visitor parking lot at the end of the driveway; all the way to the end past the entrance. If you go in the main entrance, the jam is held in an entertainment room down the main hallway and to the left. All skill levels are welcome: the goal is to keep it pure bluegrass.

Also folks should know that Jeff's dad passed away on Wednesday (94 years old, legendary mandolin player). This little blurb was in the CNY Bluegrass list, I received the news from Lou C. below ...

"We have received the sad news that Maurice Lovell died this afternoon. Our love and prayers go out to his family. Waltz with the Angels, Maurice. We will let you know about the arrangements as soon as we can. Cards and messages can be sent to: Lovell Family, 3765 Sentinel Heights, LaFayette NY 13084"

Danby Public Library - FREE

Paris Texas (Bobby Henrie & Rick Manning) will be joined by mandolin monster Jesse Cobb (founding member of the Infamous Stringdusters) in a concert at the Danby Library on Sunday afternoon, May 13 @ 3pm. This is a free community concert series and will be an unplugged performance. Bobby and Rick play an energetic mix bluegrass with western and string swing music. They are pleased to be joined by Jesse Cobb, a great mandolin player who recently moved to Southern Ontario, near Niagara Falls with his wife and family. Check out some of Jesse's you tube mando duets with Frank Solivan for a real treat.
Mandolin Master Class @12pm
Jesse will be offering a mandolin master class from 12 - 2pm on Sunday, May 13 for $40 per person. Contact Rick rick@wintervillagebluegrass.org to preregister for this workshop.
