Laurie Hart and Stefhan Ohlstrom Sept 2
On Sunday, September 2, Laurie Hart, of Ithaca, will present an old-time fiddle concert emphasizing the folk music of Sweden, from 2-5 p.m. at the North American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame and Museum, 1121 Comins Rd., Osceola. Laurie will be accompanied by Swedish folk musician Stefhan Ohlstrom, playing fiddle, viola and nyckelharpa. This free concert is sponsored in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
Laurie Hart is known throughout the North East as a dance fiddler who specializes in the music of Sweden, Quebec, Brittany and Ireland. She also plays the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle, which dates to the 1600s, and the Swedish nyckelharpa, which dates to the 1300s. She enjoys introducing audiences to these beautiful and unusual instruments, both of which ring along with sympathetic under-strings, creating their unique resonance. Laurie has made many visits to Québec and Sweden to play and collect music and do research. Stefhan Ohlström is a Rikspelman (Fiddler of the Realm), a winner of the prestigious silver medal in Swedish traditional fiddling in 1983. He is particularly known for his beautiful and skillful harmony playing on fiddle and viola. He teaches and plays for dancing in both Sweden & the USA, where he makes his home in Ithaca.
Dances and concerts by Laurie and Stefhan are full of glorious harmony, lilt and spark. They play traditional dance tunes from Sweden, which run the gamut from joyful and spritely to dark and intense. When they add nyckelharpas and Hardanger fiddle it becomes a folk instrument extravaganza. Laurie and Stefhan have recorded three CDs of Scandinavian music, and two more CDs are in the works to complete the Scandinavian series.
The next free Sunday concert at the Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame in Osceola, on Sunday, September 9, will feature Fiddlin’s Fun, the Southern tier area chapter of NYSOTFA. The Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame and Museum is open during the Sunday concerts and all the facilities are handicapped accessible and enclosable in the event of bad weather. For directions, visit www.nysotfa.com or call (315) 599-7009 and leave a message. The final event of the N.Y. State Old Tyme Fiddlers' free summer concert series – traditionally known as the "Roger Thesier House Party" - will take place from 12:00 to 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 30 at the North American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame, 1120 Comins Road, Osceola. Festivities include a dish-to-pass lunch from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m., a free fiddle jam from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m., and a Quilt Show featuring over 15 quilts and a Silent Auction and drawing.
This event wraps up a series of free fiddle concerts that have been presented every Sunday from Memorial Day through the last weekend in September, funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency. The celebration is named for the late Roger Thesier, “the Happy Fiddler” - a NY State Fiddlers' Hall of Fame inductee who shared his love for fiddling with many people. The past season has provided many reasons to celebrate: attendance at concerts increased 20%, donations were generous, Fiddlin’ Future, the new youth chapter, performed its first concert at the Fiddler’s Pavilion, and a $6,000 grant was received from the Pratt Northam Foundation of Lowville, making it possible to install a much needed new septic system and leach field.
The Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame and Museum will be open for viewing during Sunday’s event. Handicapped accessible facilities include a covered, enclosable performance and seating area and with a patio and umbrella picnic tables.
For directions or information about other fiddling activities offered during the off season by the New York State Old Tyme Fiddlers’ Association or any of its six chapters, visit the website at www.nysotfa.com or call 315-487-8806.
