Open Bluegrass Fiddle Workshop in October at Geneva Community Center

On Sunday, October 14, from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. Sunday Sessions for Continuing Fiddlers will present a
bluegrass fiddle workshop featuring local fiddler Peter McDonald. Fiddlers at any experience level are
invited to participate in this special event at the Geneva Community Center (Art Room), 160 Carter
Road, Geneva. After the workshop, from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. there will be an open jam including other
bluegrass musicians to share the real bluegrass experience. The cost is $25.00; pre-registration
required by October 1 s t. Please e-mail Kit Fallon at ckfallon@hotmail.com for information and put
“Bluegrass Workshop” in the subject line.

Peter McDonald has bluegrass in his blood. Currently the fiddle player with Rebecca Colleen and the
Chore Lads, a regional bluegrass band featuring his 18-year-old daughter Rebecca, Peter is also the
president of the Finger Lakes Bluegrass Association, and hosts the annual Brantling Bluegrass
Festival, held the first weekend in August in Sodus, NY.
Peter has been a lifelong musician, performing on stage and in bands with Randy Travis, Gene Watson,
Doc Watson, Jack Lawrence, David Wills, Jonathan Edwards, Wayne Kemp, Narvel Felts, and John
Hall among others. He started with classical violin and at 16, found bluegrass, and hasn't looked back
since. Peter and his wife Shannon also run a 220 acre organic livestock farm in the Finger Lakes region
of NY raising chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, pork and eggs...oh, and 9 children.
"There is no greater musical genre than bluegrass for passing on the enjoyment, history and musical
spontaneity of music. This is definitely the original family music, learned on the front porches and in
the living rooms of countless thousands of homes in America. These traditional tunes, in their original
style gives a solid foundation of the history of our country, and there is no more musically
approachable genre on the planet. Anyone, any time, at any age, can play and enjoy bluegrass, and as
more progressive players come to the fore, the growth and popularity of bluegrass is even more
exciting. I hope a number of folks will take the time to attend this workshop and learn a bit about how
important the fiddle is to bluegrass, as well as learn some tips to make your fiddle playing better."
Sunday Sessions for Continuing Fiddlers is one of a series of fiddle classes offered by Kit Fallon, a
local performing fiddler with over 35 years of experience sharing the joys and excitement of playing
fiddle music. Sunday Sessions, Beginning Fiddle and Level 2 Fiddle classes are offered in September,
January, and April. For more information e-mail ckfallon@hotmail.com or call 315-521-9630.

Scottish Fiddle Workshop at Geneva Community Center on Nov. 18

Local violinists and fiddlers will have a unique opportunity to learn history, provenance and techniques
of traditional Scottish fiddling on Sunday, November 18th, from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. at the Geneva
Community Center. Rochester fiddler Jeremy Button will be leading this workshop.
In 2007, Jeremy traveled to Scotland and attended his first music session. Though a long tradition of
Irish music existed in Rochester, there was no regular “home” for those seeking the unique Scottish
flavor. Through his efforts, there is now a Rochester Traditional Scottish Music Association and
regularly scheduled Scottish sessions open to all. His background and research into Scottish music,
regional styles and techniques will provide a great experience for fiddlers wanting to develop and
expand their repetoire.
Cost for attending the workshop will be $25, pre-registration requested. The workshop will be
followed by an open Scottish music jam for any other interested musicians from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at no
charge. This workshop is sponsored as a part of Sunday Sessions, ongoing weekly classes for
continuing fiddlers offered by Kit Fallon.
For registration information, e-mail ckfallon@hotmail.com (put “Scottish workshop”in the subject line)
or leave a voice mail at 315-521-9630.

A NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION - SHARE THE FIDDLE EXPERIENCE
If you have a yen to learn how to play fiddle and also to explore a world-wide range of fiddle styles,
classes with veteran fiddler Kit Fallon are a great musical and social experience.
Starting January 7th, Beginning Fiddle Classes for adults (over 16) will be offered at the Geneva
Community Center, 160 Carter Road, Geneva. Evening classes are on Mondays, 7:00 – 8:30 pm. and
run for 10 weeks. Beginning Fiddle Classes are also being given at the West Bloomfield
Congregational Church on Saturday mornings from 10:00 – 11:30 am.) starting January 12th. A 10%
tuition discount is available for paid registrations received before December 22nd.
Kit has been a performing musician for over 35 years, and has taught fiddle classes through adult
ed. programs at Cayuga Community College, Finger Lakes Community College, and other
venues in Rochester and the Finger Lakes region. She is currently a member of The Wastrels
(Rochester and points east – Celtic, Blues, Old-Time, Cajun, Appalachian, Adirondack styles),
Dogtown (Geneva – jazz, original), Miller’s Wheel (Finger Lakes region – original, novelty) and is
part of the fiddle/banjo duo Unholy Alliance. These groups perform regularly at local wineries,
restaurants/cafes, bars, outdoor events, parties, and weddings.
Kit's series of 10-week classes (Beginning Fiddle, Level 2 Fiddle and Sunday Sessions) focus on basic
fiddle techniques, but also explore a wide range of fiddle styles including Old-Time, Bluegrass, Celtic,
Cajun, and many others. Her one-on-one approach to teaching begins with identifying each student’s
learning style and incorporating this with class teamwork to get the group playing music right from the
start. “I always tell my beginning students that they will be playing a tune in the second class. Many of
them don’t believe me, but they always manage to pull it off! It’s wonderful to see them light up, when
it happens. From that point on, anything is possible.”
For registration information, e-mail ckfallon@hotmail.com, and put “Fiddle Class” in the subject line,
or call 315-521-9630.
