Cornell summer dance concert on July 3 features works by Lindsay Gilmour
Choreographer Lindsay Gilmour will present Ahhhhhh: A Festival of Sound at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3, at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, 430 College Avenue, Ithaca. Sponsored by Cornell University's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, the dance concert is free and open to the public.
A common theme in the show's three pieces is emotion, says Gilmour. "Across cultures we all recognize expressions of love, loss, fear, and hope in the voice and body.... Through movement we find a voice that cannot be confined to any one language."
Gilmour, who teaches in Ithaca College's Department of Theatre Arts, has had her choreography performed at the Schwartz Center, Hangar Theatre, and Kitchen Theatre in Ithaca as well as at the American College Dance Festival, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, and Movement Research in New York City. She is currently pursuing an MFA in performance and choreography at Peck School of the Arts.
Cornell’s free summer events series runs from June 26 to August 3 and features performances at the Schwartz Center, lectures at Call Auditorium in Kennedy Hall, and outdoor concerts on the Arts Quad. Featuring Eric Aceto on fiddle, Neal Massa on accordion, Joe Massa on guitar, Doug Robinson on bass, Michael Wellen on drums, and Deb Clover on scrubboard, Gumbo Ya Ya delivers high-energy music redolent of the Big Easy but flavored with a little bit of country, a touch of swing, an occasional calypso beat, and some old rock and roll.
In case of thunderstorms or heavy rain, the concert will take place in Uris Auditorium.

Matuto brings Brazilian-influenced roots music to Schwartz Center on July 10
Imagine the sound of a Brazilian Carnival in the Appalachian Mountains, with blues-drenched vocals, telecaster twangs, accordion acrobatics, and folksy fiddle tunes layered over Latin and African rhythms. That's the sound of Matuto, a New York City-based band that will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts (430 College Ave., Ithaca) as part of Cornell University's free summer events series.
Deeply rooted in American musical traditions, Matuto embraces modern techniques and global influences. Using guitar, accordion, bass, drums, and various Brazilian percussion instruments, the band creates a unique sound that JazzTimes magazine calls “weird and wonderful… unorthodox and delightful.”

Ancient soul meets avant-garde folk when Epiphany Project returns to the Schwartz Center July 17
Now based in Berlin, the world music ensemble Epiphany Project will make a return visit to the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, July 17, while touring the U.S. to promote their newest recording, Live in Germany. Part of the free summer events series sponsored by Cornell’s School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, the show will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Classically trained singer Bet Williams brings to Epiphany Project a powerful four-octave vocal range and a theatrical, charismatic stage presence. On piano, John Hodian combines world music rhythms, free jazz, and a classical melodic sensibility while weaving a perfect counterpoint to Williams’ lyrical vocals. Propelling the music forward is drummer/percussionist Mal Stein, whose deep understanding of jazz and rock drumming is complemented by his command of Middle Eastern hand percussion.
With an intriguing mix of ancient sacred texts (often in dead languages), hauntingly beautiful melodies, and hypnotic rhythms played on instruments from Hodian’s ancestral homeland of Armenia, Epiphany Project creates a sound that the Washington Post calls “a unique hybrid of world music, art song, Americana and avant-garde folk; utterly uncategorizeable, but always transcendently beautiful.”
Cornell’s free summer events series runs from June 26 to August 3 and features performances at the Schwartz Center, lectures at Call Auditorium in Kennedy Hall, and outdoor concerts on the Arts Quad. Radio London brings the sound of the '60s to the Cornell Arts Quad on July 20
If you're a fan of vintage rock 'n' roll, you'll want to be on the Cornell Arts Quad on Friday, July 20, for a rollicking free concert with Radio London, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
An Ithaca institution, Radio London is dedicated to bringing new life to gems from the golden age of Top 40 radio. Their repertoire of foot-tapping, booty-shaking tunes from the Animals to the Zombies includes such favorites as "Jailhouse Rock," "She Loves You," "Dream Lover," and "Brown-Eyed Girl."
In case of thunderstorms or heavy rain, the concert will take place in Uris Auditorium.
The concert is sponsored by Cornell University's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions as part of Cornell's free summer events series, which runs from June 26 to August 3 and includes concerts on the Arts Quad, performances at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, and lectures at Call Auditorium in Kennedy Hall. "Journey West" at the Schwartz Center, July 24, chronicles evolution of tunes on the move
Max Buckholtz will present "Journey West" at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, as part of the free summer events series sponsored by Cornell University’s School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions.
"Journey West" chronicles the migration of musical melodies from their countries of origin to distant lands. With Dara Anissi, Mark Wienand, Chad Lieberman, and Nikolai Ruskin, Buckholtz will demonstrate how tunes change as war, imperialism, nomadic dispersions, mass emigrations, and musical crazes spread them across the globe. The ensemble will focus on melodies and instrumentation that started in the Middle East and traveled through Europe and across the ocean to the New World.

Party with El Rumbon on the Arts Quad July 27
Get out your dancing shoes, because El Rumbon means “big dance party”—and that’s what will happen when this sizzling Latin band launches into a merengue, plena, bomba, cumbia, or chachacha on the Cornell Arts Quad at 7:00 p.m. on July 27. Led by conga player Charlie Izzo, El Rumbon offers irresistible music from south of the border, played with passion and joy on brass, strings, and percussion.
If thunderstorms or heavy rain threatens, the party will take place in Uris Auditorium.
Bilson, Moseley, and Lee present music for one and two fortepianos at the Schwartz Center, July 31
Malcolm Bilson, Cornell professor emeritus of music and world-class fortepianist, will be joined by Roger Moseley and Mike Lee in a free concert of works by Haydn and Mozart on Tuesday, July 31, at 7:30 p.m. at Cornell University's Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts.
Bilson, a member of the Cornell music faculty since 1968, has been a key contributor to the restoration of the fortepiano to the concert stage. He gives fortepiano workshops in the U.S. and Europe, as well as master classes, lectures, and performances around the world.
Moseley teaches music history and theory at Cornell. He has published articles on eighteenth-century improvisatory culture and has facilitated workshops in improvisation, and on Tuesday he will perform an improvisation based on musical materials supplied by members of the audience.
Lee, a student of Bilson's, has performed as a concerto soloist and as a recitalist in concert venues in the U.S., New Zealand, and Taiwan.
This concert is part of a free summer events series sponsored by Cornell's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions. The final two offerings of the series are a lecture by Steven Strogatz at Call Auditorium on Wednesday, August 1, and a concert on the Arts Quad with the Horse Flies on Friday, August 3.

Steven Strogatz to talk about "Doing Math in Public" at Cornell on August 1
One of the world's most highly cited mathematicians and a frequent guest on NPR's RadioLab, Steven Strogatz will give a talk on “Doing Math in Public” on Wednesday, August 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Kennedy Hall’s Call Auditorium on the Cornell University campus. Sponsored by the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, the lecture is free and open to the public.
Strogatz, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Applied Mathematics at Cornell, authored a fifteen-part series on the elements of math, from basic to baffling, for The New York Times in 2010. To his surprise—and his editor's—each piece climbed the most e-mailed list and elicited hundreds of appreciative comments.
In his lecture, Strogatz will describe his adventures in bringing math to the masses and will offer a preview of his new book, The Joy of X: A Guided Tour of Math, from One to Infinity, as well as his sequel series for the Times this fall.
This is the final lecture in Cornell's free summer events series, which runs from June 26 to August 3 and includes performances at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, lectures at Call Auditorium, and concerts on the Arts Quad. The Horse Flies bring "post-modern mountain music" to the Cornell Arts Quad August 3
Making their first appearance on the Cornell Arts Quad, The Horse Flies will bring Cornell's free summer events series to a rousing close with a concert at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3.
A longtime favorite of critics and fans, The Horse Flies blend Americana roots with indie rock, ethnic percussion, creative songwriting, and a fierce, percolating groove. The Flies explore the intersection of traditional and modern music to create a style entirely their own. Part trance-inducing minimalism and part folk-rock American gothic, The Flies’ music is intense, quirky, and poetic.
In case of thunderstorms or heavy rain, the concert will take place in Uris Auditorium.
Sponsored by Cornell University's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, the free summer events series includes concerts on the Arts Quad, performances at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, and lectures at Call Auditorium in Kennedy Hall.
