Third Annual Fiddlehead Frolic -- Noon to Midnight, Saturday, April 4 at Boynton Middle School, 1601 N. Cayuga St., Ithaca. Prices vary by session (afternoon, evening, or all-day) with discount for advance registration and for Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca www.hands4dancers.org

As ferns and early wildflowers begin to push through winter-compressed litter and tardy snow, dancers and musicians, too, can unfurl in 12 hours of non-stop contras, English, Scandinavian, waltzes, workshops for musicians and callers, and open instrumental jamming.

In case high spirits and sublime music are not fuel enough, there will be sandwiches and a waltz jam at noon and a community potluck supper at 6:15 pm. Boston-based Phantom Power, with fiddle-wiz Lissa Schneckenburger, keyboard master Bruce Rosen, and gifted caller Sue Rosen will ignite the crowd with New England contras. Callers Katy Heine and Nancy Spero will also be on hand. Ithaca’s own Contrapasso, with Tim Ball on soulful fiddle and Roberta Truscello on inventive piano, will slide seamlessly from contras to sublime English country, skillfully taught by Pamela Goddard. Laurie Hart and Stefhan Ohlström will double-fiddle for Scandi’ dances lead by Dick Darlington and Pamela Goddard. Phantom Power members will host workshops, and there is space for informal jam marathons. Whether it’s fingers or feet that are flying, you’ll find hours of delight in celebratory company.

For a full schedule, money-saving advance registration (downloadable form), and other details, visit www.hands4dancers.org or call 607-539-3174. Out-of-towners who need a place to stay should e-mail info2@hands4dancers.org

Hi dancers,

Spring forward a month and save April 4th for the Fiddlehead Frolic 2009 with TWELVE HOURS of Contras, English Country, workshops and jamming, starting at Noon at the Boynton Middle School (1601 North Cayuga St.) in Ithaca, NY.

JOIN US and DANCE to the highly charged Phantom Power (Lissa Schneckenburger on fiddle and Bruce Rosen on keyboard) with Sue Rosen calling; and our own Ithaca-based Contrapasso (Tim Ball and Roberta Truscello) with callers, Nancy Spero and Katy Heine.

Phantom Power is a Boston-based duo formed in 2001, playing traditional New England fiddle repertoire that never failed to delight and excite its audiences. Phantom Power has played far and wide including Pinewoods (MA), Echo Summit (CA), the Dandelion Romp (OH), the Silkeborg Dance Weekend (Denmark) and the Christmas Country Dance School (KY) as well as regular contradances throughout New England. Some of you may have heard Lissa when she played at Bound for Glory in December, 2008. It was awesome. At the Frolic, you’ll be able to do more than tap your foot to her music!

Contrapasso comprised of two classically trained local musicians, has been playing lively contra and English country dances for us for about two years. Tim is a senior music major at Ithaca College while Roberta has played for contra and English dances throughout the region, founding a number of bands including The Free Radicals, Drosophila’s Maggot and Lost in Austen.

The schedule also includes a Scandi workshop (with Laurie Hart and Stefhan Ohlstrom!!), waltz jam with dancing, a musician’s workshop with Lissa and Bruce, a caller’s workshop, and a potluck supper.

Register by March 24th, and you can take advantage of reduced price advance tickets AND get a FF09 button! Go to www.hands4dancers.org for details. The pre-registration form is in our FF09 brochure.

If you are coming from out of town and need assistance finding a place to stay, let us know. We will be happy to help you find a place to stay. Email info2@hands4dancers.org.

And plan to extend your dancing fun by coming to the TCCD Friday night dance on April 3rd at the Bethel Grove Community Center on Route 79 (1825 Slaterville Rd), 4 miles east of Ithaca Commons. Check www.tedcrane.com/TCCD for details.

Spring is on its way – the Fiddlehead Frolic is in sight! Come celebrate the first signs of spring with hours of fabulous dancing with Phantom Power and Contrapasso!

Contra Dance with CROWFOOT and George Marshall
Saturday, 31 October, 4-6 pm; 8-11 pm; potluck 6:30 pm
Beverly Martin School, 302 W. Buffalo St., Ithaca

Hands Four Dancers is thrilled to host veteran Pioneer Valley caller George Marshall and the Ithaca debut of the multinational band Crowfoot, which has been heating up dance floors and concert stages across the land, including the recent Brattleboro Dawn Dance. Adam Broome (from rural England), on guitar, cittern, and vocals, draws inspiration from diverse wells: Renaissance to reggae. Jaige Trudel on fiddle, cello, and vocals shows her classical-Celtic-Appalachian roots in sweet, fiery playing. Canadian Nicholas Williams (flutes, accordion, piano, vocals) is a scholar of world music, from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, and Québec, to North India. Crowfoot, which melds traditional and original tunes, is known for euphoric groove music, infectious energy, and superb, tight “ensemble” instrumentals and vocals.

There’s a 4-6 pm session for experienced dancers, a 6:30 pm potluck supper, and a session 8-11 pm for all dancers. Newcomers are welcome; a beginner's workshop at 7:30 pm will cover the simple steps and each dance is taught. No need to bring a partner, but please bring clean, soft-soled shoes. Whole event: $12 members/$15 nonmembers; afternoon only: $6/$8; evening only: $9/$12. Info: 607-539-3174 or http://hands4dancers.org

Cornell Contra Dance Club -- From Dennis: "We're starting up a Cornell Contra Dance Club! One goal is to sponsor a couple of contra dances at the Willard Strait Memorial Room, each year (Cornell International Folk Dancers used to sponsor one, but they are no longer doing big on campus contras). The startup meeting is at S1-007 Schurman Hall in the Vet school, 6-7 pm on Monday, November 9th. We will need students for officers, but anyone can participate! If folks have questions, I'm at dk429@cornell.edu -- Thanks, Dennis Kolva"

Hands Four Contra Dance with Contrapasso and Sarah VanNorstrand
Saturday, Dec. 5, 8-11 pm
Beverly J. Martin School, 302 W. Buffalo St., Ithaca

Even if winter blows into town by December, here’s an event to warm you: energetic caller Sarah VanNorstrand, who danced here while she was at Ithaca College and now calls with her husband’s band, Great Bear Trio, teams with Contrapasso, the Ithaca-based, mellifluous fiddle/piano duo of Tim Ball and Roberta Truscello. Contrapasso is in high demand for spirited contra and English country dances. Both Tim and Roberta are classically trained, with a passion for traditional dance, great playfulness, versatility, and soul. Tim Ball graduated with a major in music from Ithaca College, where he played in chamber and jazz ensembles and the symphony orchestra. In the contra world, he has pooled his talents with a growing roster of fine musicians including Roberta Truscello, David Kaynor, Jane Knoeck, Tom Hodgson, Tunescape, and the O'Shanigans. Tim’s fiddle swoops in graceful, imaginative improvisation and he has penned some remarkable tunes. These days, he doesn’t seem to get much time off between gigs! Roberta Truscello began music lessons at age five and studied piano and cello into her teens, but then got the dance bug. Since 1993, she has played for English country and contras in NJ, PA, MA, and NY and has founded a host of bands, including The Free Radicals, Drosophila's Maggot, and Lost in Austen. She also sings and plays accordion for The Grateful Deadlines in D.C., a rock band of research administrators. With Contrapasso, the timing is perfect and the sound sublime.

Newcomers are always welcome to contra dances; the steps are simple and each dance is quickly taught. No need to bring a partner, but please bring clean, soft-soled shoes. Admission $8 for members of Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca, $10 for non-members. Info: 607-539-3174 or http://hands4dancers.org. Many dancers may also wish to support the benefit concert for Shaleshock; both events were booked for the same time before we realized the overlap. The two venues are only a few blocks apart, so it’s possible to participate in both.

REVEILLONS in Ithaca 4/10: Afternoon workshops, evening contra dance!

Many of you danced to them at last year’s Flurry—and how lucky are we that they’re coming to the U.S. in April and want to do a dance for us here in Ithaca!?! RÉVEILLONS means “Wake up!” in French, and this energetic and multi-talented quartet from Quebec is sure to wake you up with their driving rhythms and fresh interpretations of traditional French Canadian tunes.

In addition to a fabulous evening contra dance from 8-11 at Boynton Middle School (the same location as the 2009 Fiddlehead Frolic), the band members are offering afternoon workshops for a limited number of participants. These workshops include fiddle with Richard Forest (2:30-4:00); step-dancing (2:30-4:00) and Quebecois social dance (4:30-6:00) with Jean-Francois Berthiaume; and the history of Quebecois music (4:30-6:00) with David Berthiaume. To register for a workshop, please contact Laura Taylor at LBT1@cornell.edu. The workshops are $15 each, or two for $25.

Other upcoming dances to put on your calendar are

Great Bear Trio with Adina Gordon calling on May 22,

and

Riverbend (Rebecca McCallum, Jane Knoeck, and Tom Santasiero) on August 28.

See you on the dance floor!
Katy Heine, Secretary
Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca

Beginners’ instruction 7:45 pm; contra dance 8-11 pm
Boynton Middle School

Réveillons, mes amis! Wake up! Spring is upon us, and here is a springing opportunity to spend an afternoon and evening in the company of some effervescent French Canadian musicians. Réveillons wowed the crowds at last year’s Dance Flurry with irresistible music and brisk, jolly (et jolie) dances, both familiar and with some fresh twists. Let’s greet their debut in Ithaca with a rousing response.

This multi-talented quartet from Québec features energetic rhythms and imaginative interpretations of traditional French Canadian tunes. And joie de vivre above all! They take pride in being both audacious and authentic. Réveillons includes David Berthiaume (voice, jaw harp, concertina), Jean-François Berthiaume (stepdance, bodhran, foot percussion, suitcase, voice), Richard Forest (swinging fiddle), and Marc Maziade (guitar, tenor banjo, voice, infused with jazz, blues, and Flamenco). Ithaca’s Katy Heine will be calling contras in style, and Jean-Francois Berthiaume, one of Québec’s stellar callers, will intersperse some French Canadian squares.

For dancers who are wondering about the Hands Four “Fiddlehead Frolic,” it will return next April. Meanwhile, consider April 10 a “Fiddle and Frolic” event that spans four workshops from 2:30 to 6:00 pm, a potluck supper, and dancing from 7:45-11 pm, all at Boynton Middle School.

Réveillons afternoon workshops are: fiddle with Richard Forest (2:30-4:00); step-dancing (2:30-4:00) and Quebecois social dance (4:30-6:00) with Jean-Francois Berthiaume; and the history of Quebecois music (4:30-6:00) with David Berthiaume. Workshops are $15 each or two for $25. Participation is limited, so register early by contacting Laura Taylor at LBT1@cornell.edu.

Beginners are welcome (simple steps taught at 7:45 pm). No need to bring a partner, but please bring clean, soft-soled shoes and something yummy to share for the potluck supper. Dance admission: $9 for HFDI members, $12 for nonmembers. Info: 607-539-3174 or www.hands4dancers.org

Great Bear Trio Contra Dance with Adina Gordon

Saturday, May 22, 8-11 pm
Beverly J. Martin School, 302 W. Buffalo St., Ithaca, NY
$8 HFDI members/$10 nonmembers

You may have danced to them at big festivals, in Rochester, or on the east and west coasts, but it has been three long years since the Great Bear Trio has performed in Ithaca. You don’t want to miss their boundless energy, spirited fun, and musical virtuosity. Brothers Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand set a high standard for modern contra dances, inventively playing an eclectic mix of traditional and original tunes from Celtic, French-Canadian, Scandinavian, and Appalachian to World Beat. Just a few years back, they were finalists on Prairie Home Companion's national "Talent under 20" competition, and are crowd favorites at the Dance Flurry. They play (at last count) 14 instruments, including fiddles, guitars, bouzouki, mandolin, bodhran, djembe, and didgeridoo, while their mother Kim Yerton provides a solid, lively foundation on piano. New Englander Adina Gordon will call with her trademark joy. She’s appreciated throughout North America for her inspired choice of dances and gift for clear teaching that maximizes dance time. She and the GBT are a great match! Beginners are most welcome: the steps are simple and each dance is taught. Beginner’s workshop at 7:30 pm. There is no need to bring a partner. Please bring clean, soft-soled shoes to protect the floor! For more information, visit www.hands4dancers.org or call 607/539-3174.

It’s been a hot, dry summer around these parts, but Riverbend is about to flow into town for a cool event guaranteed to keep dancers floating in contra bliss. Rebecca McCallum (fiddle) and Jane Knoeck (piano and accordion) of the Groovemongers will be joined by Tom Santasiero (mandolin, tenor banjo, guitar, foot percussion). The energy and musicality will be at peak flow. Bev Bernbaum will call with her celebrated aplomb.

Beginners are encouraged to try out contra dancing; there’s a workshop for newcomers at 7:30 pm. Each dance is taught, the steps are simple, and the dance community is welcoming and helpful. You don’t need to bring a partner, but please bring clean, soft-soled shoes. Admission $8 for members of Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca; $10 for nonmembers. You can join at the dance and receive discounts on all dances for a year. HFDI is an all-volunteer community nonprofit organization dedicated to hosting great dances. December 4 with Tunescape

Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca is closing out the year with a great dance on December 4 with Tunescape, a wonderfully innovative band whose members include Tim Ball on fiddle; Jodi Austin on keyboard and second fiddle; Nadine Dyskant on flute; Rachel Bell on accordion; and Peter Blue on percussion and accordion. Tunescape is known for exploring music outside the bounds of New England contra dance and for freshly interpreting tunes of Quebec, Appalachia, Ireland, and elsewhere. Their music is joyous, clever, and exceedingly danceable.

The dance will take place at Beverly Martin School gym, 302 W. Buffalo Street, from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m., preceded by a potluck supper at 6:30 and a beginners' workshop at 7:30. General admission to the dance is $8. Dances will be ably taught and called by Tom Calwell and Myra Hirschberg, a husband-and-wife team from Peterborough, Canada. Please bring clean, soft-soled shoes.

If you have questions, visit www.hands4dancers.org, or call Tom Gudeman at 539-3174. Hope to see many of you there!
