Oct 03 2008 -- Great turnout! The cool waether, getting dark early [and maybe all those emails?] helped get folks out dancing and playing in the band! Very nice. Thanks to all! -m _________________ Michael Ludgate - forum administrator

Mike,
I've started a pre-dance waltz here in Denver CO modeled after the one you do in Ithaca and was wondering if you could recommend a few waltzes for intermediate muscians that have worked well there. Our first one is Jan 8.
Thanks.

YFN folks -
Here's a heads-up (or a reminder) that this Friday's (05-Aug)
Waltz Jam is at a special location, part of the
Middle-of-Summer Barn Dance thing we're doing this week.
My birthday doesn't often fall on a Friday, so this
seemed like a good moment for such a special event.
Anyway, here's details:
6pm - potluck supper
7pm-ish - waltz jam
8pm-ish - contra and barn dances [ www.oshanigans.com ]
Location: The Slow Lane Barn
It's at the corner of Comfort and Love, uh, Lieb Roads
in Danby. About 8 miles, total, from the Commons.
If you use Google Maps, search for "814 Comfort Road Spencer NY".
If you're coming from Ithaca, may I suggest
- Aurora Street, NYS Rt.96B south.
- pass Ithaca College, then pass King Road.
- turn right at Comfort Road.
- Follow Comfort Road, passing Yaple, Miller, and Gunderman Roads.
- When Comfort Road becomes a dirt road, you're there.
- Park Anywhere, but please, not in the middle of the road!
- Entrance is at South end of barn, opposite "Slow Lane" sign.
Coming from the South (Candor, Owego, etc),
- When you enter the Town of Danby, slow down.
- Turn left on Bald Hill Road (to Jennings Pond).
- If you see the Town Hall on the left, you've missed the turn, go back.
- Bald Hill Road about 0.6 miles, then turn right on Lieb Road.
- All the way (0.8 miles) to the top of Lieb Road.
- You're there.
Bring: more than the usual!
- You and yours, and your friends
- Your instrument(s)
- A dish for potluck, if you arrive at the time
- A chair, if you like to sit
- Utensils, etc
- A battery-powered lamp, if you plan to stay after dark
- Shoes or appropriate footwear; this is a hard-surfaced barn floor!
There's a nice breeze in the barn (usually), it's dry (mostly)
even when the weather isn't, and a nice view out the barn doors.
We hope to see you!
-ted
PS: and don't forget...
Every Monday, starting June 6, until the weather
gets cold in mid- to late- September. 7:30-10pm
on the Ithaca Commons.
This is the "big band" event season. In recent
years we've almost always had 15-20 musicians,
sometimes as many as 30. The music officially
begins at 7:30, but some folks arrive a little
early to play informally. Dancing starts at 7:30
or whatever informal time the dancers arrive.
Rain or shine. The dancers musicians are under
cover of the roof. It always amazes me how many
dancers will show up, even during inclement weather! _________________ Michael Ludgate - forum administrator

|
|
Hello folks,
Reminder; we have a waltz jam this coming Friday Sept 02 2011 from 7-8 pm at Bethel Grove Community Center. The Waltz Jam is an open band where we play waltzes (mostly from Bill Matthiesen's Waltz Books I.II,III - ask me (Mike) for more info if don't have these). We set up in a jam circle in the middle of the dance floor and the dancers waltz around the musicans! It is really a fun experience!
Following the Waltz Jam is the regular contra dance 8-11 pm with a more formal band. You should plan to stay and contra dance after the waltz jam band or at least listen!! This week's band includes 2 new contra musicians. One from Texas and one from Washington State. Both were in contra dance bands previously and are fantastic musicians. Here is the blurb from my calendar listing.
"Celebrate the START of the semester with the latest exciting version of NO'Shanigans! A fun DANCE PARTY featuring special guests Ethan Jodziewicz (guitar, bass, banjo and feet) and Andrea Katz (fiddle) along with Mike Ludgate (mandolin) at Bethel Grove Community Center. This is also a WALTZ JAM night, so come early! Dancing (to a waltz jam) starts at 7:00 pm and the contra dance starts at 8:00 pm. Local favorite house callers will be calling the contra dances; including Megan Ludgate!. All at 1825 Slaterville Road (Rt 79 about 4 miles east of Ithaca) Ithaca NY dancing from 7-11 pm. Admission $6- Sponsored by: TCCD - Tompkins County Country Dances. Don't miss this celebration of the roots of New England folk dance! This is an authentic Old New England style venue with a newly refinished wooden dance floor! Bring clean shoes, a water bottle and YOUR FRIENDS! All dances taught, No partner needed. This will be a fun dance! FB event PHOTOS directions https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=202065713191436 (also see www.oshanigans.org )."
Sept 3rd -- The next DAY!! JAM - S L O W L A N E Party, Saturday, September 3 - Last year, there was some great jamming at this party: some of the areas best contra dance musicians were there, just hanging out with their instruments! The fine details: where when http://canaaninstitute.org/mikesmusic/viewtopic.php?p=4278#4278
Other open bands; Monday nights on the Commons will happen for another 2-3 weeks. Come join in; dance and play! 7:30-10:00 pm
Wednesday nights at my place; weekly contra dance jam session. This is not a slow jam anymore, but the emphasis is still on learning. The last hour of the jam is "no sheet music allowed" to encourage ear training. More info http://canaaninstitute.org/mn/mus_jamcann.html 7-10 pm weekly all winter long.
See you Friday I hope!!

YFN folks -
Here's a heads-up (or a reminder) about this Friday's (05-Apr)
Waltz Jam and Contra Dance.
Anyway, here's details:
7pm-ish - waltz jam
8pm-ish - contra dance with Mockin'bird
Bethel Grove Community Center
1825 Slaterville Road (NYS Rt.79, about 4 miles east of Ithaca)
Note: the Community Center is a bit east of the Bible Church!
As always (and almost always on the first Friday of the month),
you're invited to bring your instrument and play during the
waltz jam. Hey, you can dance, too, and bring your friends
to dance with.
Tunes are typically chosen from the Waltz Books (Bill Mattiesen).
Purchase locally from Mike: http://canaaninstitute.org/mn/mus_sound.html
No pay for the jam, and the crowd varies from small
to moderate, but it's fun to play and the dancers are
most appreciative. _________________ Michael Ludgate - forum administrator
