Fiddlespel and Friends: Ithaca Fest Parade 2013

Calling all Fiddlers!

I am happy to announce that Fiddlespel and Friends was once again accepted for participation in the Ithaca Festival Parade this year. Brush up on those Scandi processional tunes! The parade is on Wednesday, May 29 this year. We plan on playing the following tunes:

Trettondagsmarschen (Epiphany March) in A Major
Sura Råda (Sour Råda) in A Major/minor
Gånglåt från Vigelsjö (Vigel Lake Walking Tune) in G Major
Vandring i Världen (Wandering in the World) in D Major
Skålarna in G Major/minor

These are all old favorites but I have them available in sheet music form as well as audio files. These tunes are appropriate for Suzuki book III level and up.

We need you! Melody playing instruments, especially (but not exclusively) fiddles, also guitars and bass are welcome. We also need some non-playing volunteers to help pull garden carts, carry our beautiful banner, and carry the bass so invite your family and friends to join us. The more, the merrier!

I am also looking for two special volunteers, one to be a Manager of Volunteers and Garden Carts and another to be the Overseer of Daisy Crowns. Neither job is terribly taxing but would make things a lot easier for me. Let me know if you are interested in either position. We will also need at least two garden carts to transport our cases so please let me know if you have one to lend.

There is now a $25 charge for us to participate in the parade which we could manage two ways. 1) Everyone could chip in (likely no more than a dollar a person) or 2) they will waive the charge if someone from our group volunteers at the festival for a 3-hour shift. I will plan on the pass-the-hat option unless someone lets me know that they are interested in taking on the volunteer shift.

This is a really fun community event. Please consider joining us even if you haven't in the past!!! Please let me know if you plan to participate by sending an email to srcummings@twcny.rr.com. Let me know if you need copies of the tunes and I will send them along. Feel free to forward this on to anyone else (friends, students, neighbors etc.) you think might be interested.

We will have one or two rehearsals prior to the parade, towards the end of May so stay tuned for the final details. Typically we do a rehearsal the evening before the parade which includes a big daisy-crown-making extravaganza.

Can't wait to see our fiddling friends, old and new. Happy Spring!

Cheers,
Sarah Cummings <srcummings@twcny.rr.com>

Dear Parade Enthusiasts--

We will plan on two rehearsals for the Ithaca Festival Parade:

Monday May 20 at 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday May 28 at 6:00 p.m.

Both rehearsals will be at the little cul-de-sac behind Laurie and Dave's house, along the Waterfront trail near Cass Park. Take Buffalo Street (route 96 W towards hospital)--just after you cross over the bridge (former "octopus"), take a right onto Park Road. You can park anywhere along the circle. If it rains we can practice under the Cass Park Pavilion. If it's nice weather, we can march along the road.

On the 5/28 rehearsal, we will run through tunes and then make our daisy/maple leaf/willow crowns to wear the next day at the parade. Much fun! Thanks to Mia Boynton, Deb Thompson and Bill Mutch for taking on the crown-making. We still need volunteers to help carry the bass and pull garden carts. Let me know if you have some family members who might like to help out. It's fun!

The parade is on Wednesday May 29. Marching starts at 6:30 but we will need to line up well ahead of time (haven't been told exactly what time yet but will keep you posted). All tunes are posted on Laurie's website: www.lauriehartfiddle.com

If you haven't sent me an individual email already letting me know that you plan to participate, please do so! If you have forwarded parade information in the past, please pass this along, too. Thanks for helping to spread the word.

All best--
Sarah Cummings

Dear Parade-fiddlers (and their support systems!)--

Hard to believe that parade time is almost here. This is my attempt to try and cull the email list I've been sending out and hone it down to the folks who are actually playing. If you are getting this email and have no plans to participate in the parade, please let me know so I can stop bothering you! Conversely, if you know someone who plans to participate and isn't listed above, please forward this on to them and copy me.

To recap the next couple of weeks:
•Parade rehearsal this coming Monday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the cul-de-sac behind Laurie's house on Park road.
•Parade rehearsal and crown-making party Tuesday, May 28 at 6:00 p.m., also on Park road.
•PARADE: Wednesday, May 29 at 6:30. Lineup will be earlier, probably ca. 5:30 but I haven't been told yet.
Tunes are all up on Laurie's website: www.lauriehartfiddle.com

Please let me know if you have a garden cart to lend out and if you have friends/family that would like to come along and serve as roadies--literally! We really need one more garden cart and several more helpers. We will not be marching if there is even a bit of rain. We bring our cases along in the garden carts in the event that we need to pack up quickly due to rain. And yes, we have done that before! But I'm sure the weather will be glorious. : ) I will be passing the hat at our rehearsals to cover the $25 participation cost this year. If everyone chipped in $1, we should be fine. What a great deal!

Really looking forward to this--please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. See you on Monday!

Happy practicing--
-Sarah

Hi Folks--

Well, the weather isn't looking good, but we are going to stay optimistic!

Tonight 6:00pm: rehearsal behind Laurie's house (Park Road circle) if it's dry. Otherwise, we will meet at the Cass Park Pavilion near the Children's Garden. If it is raining (even a little bit), go straight to the pavilion (easier to park there) but if not, we will give it a try on the circle. We may or may not be making daisy crowns tonight, weather depending.

If you plan to participate, but won't be at the rehearsal tonight, PLEASE let me know today by email.

Tomorrow: lineup at 5:30 on West Jay Street (between Auburn and Cayuga). Parade starts at 6:30. Right now, there is a 50% chance of rain during that time, so we will really have to play it by ear. If there is even a bit of rain, we will have to bow out. I believe the parade as a whole is on, rain or shine.

We still need a few more non-playing volunteers to join us and pull carts, carry the bass, wear the banner, etc. Let me know tonight if you have a fan who can help out.

Thanks!

-Sarah
