This is at Longview May 19 2006

From Rick

I apologize folks for not sending out an email earlier. There has been some confusion as to where we are going to be this week. Along with that, there has been some discussion as to where we are going to be on a whole for the summer. Many folks feel we are doing a good thing by having the jams up at Longview, as the residents really seem to enjoy it, and if we were to stay there through the summer, it would make it easier to have a location for next winter. Other folks, of course, would like to be outside....the park works out well, as people bring food and drinks, and we are able to stay longer, so the it creates a little more of a "jam feeling" and it the duration makes it a little more worthwhile for those who have a long drive to get here. Of course others still, have wanted to go back to having the jam every week, and have suggested maintaining the jam up at Longview every other week, and being down at Stewart Park on alternate weeks. I haven't been able to get in touch with the new Recreation leader yet up at Longview to discuss this, but I am thinking, tentatively, that the latter plan might be the way to go. Of course, I appreciate any and all input from you folks. As for this evening, the current plan to have the jam up at Longview (in any case, it sounds like it is going to be cold and rainy, so Stewart Park would probably not be all that fun anyway). So, unless I hear otherwise from the Rec. leader at Longview, lets plan to have the jam up at Longview tonight from 6pm-8:30...and we can tentatively plan on Stewart Park next week. Again, I appreciate any input from you folks....and in the meantime, I look forward to seeing you guys up at Longview tonight. Keep on pickin'. Rick

Well folks...looks like this week will be our first week outside. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it, but I hope others will show up to kick off the Stewart park jam right. Next week we'll be back in Longview and we'll just alternate...we'll see how it goes. So this week why don't you folks meet up at the large pavillion that is nearest the entrace to the park. If that pavillion is occupied, slide over to the one by the playground. Stewart park allows food and drinks.....and I believe the lights are on until at least 10:00pm. The jam will start at 6:00pm and run until whenever. Have fun and have a great weekend!!! Rick mousetrapboy@hotmail.com

Well two weeks ago we had a great jam. I was only able to come for an hour, but I was told it went for quite a while and it turned out to be a really nice jam. There were five new faces that I haven't seen before and everyone seemed to have a great time. Lets see if we can do it again this Friday. Stewart Park, starting at 6:00 pm until the sun goes down. Last time we met out behind the large pavillion near the entrance of the park. If we aren't there due to someone reserving that space, then look over around the smaller pavillion by the playground. Happy pickin'. Rick

I just wanted to let you all know that we are NOT having the jam this week, partly because I think everyone should try to attend Pickin in the Pasture if you get the chance. Pickin in the Pasture starts tomorrow night and has earned a reputation for being an excellent jamming festival. I got a chance to attend last year and I had a great time. They've got a great lineup of bands to keep you entertained during the day, and at night, the campground jams start and often run all night long. Just walk the campgrounds and join in on a jam group that seems welcoming to your level of playing. It is a great experience and I think anyone on this list would have a great time there. Here is a link to the page for the festival: http://www.pickininthepasture.com/ I hope some of you will get a chance to check it out!!! Keep on pickin.

Rick

It's time for the Friday jam again. I hope some of you managed to make it up to Pickin' in the Pasture ... I was, unfortunately, unable to attend. This Friday we'll be having the jam at Stewart Park again starting at 6:00 pm. Get the outdoor jams in while you can, the cool evenings are a sure sign that winter is coming. Keep on pickin' and see ya Friday. -- Rick

from the coordinator of this JAM ....

Bluegrass Jam will be down at Stewart Park this week starting at 6:00 pm. It is probably going to be one of the last weeks down at Stewart Park, so try to get down there an enjoy it. If it starts to get a little chilly the enclosed pavillion works well for being a little bit of a warmer place to play. Have fun and keep on pickin'. Rick

from Harvey N .......

Bluegrass Event

Delaney Brothers Bluegrass has for their fiddler Joe Davoli, the better half of Joe and Harvey. Their stage performance is one that makes you feel good due to Ray Delaney's humble but heartfelt love of the music he plays. Then there's all the jokes often at the expense of poor Joe. Anyway this is not your average bluegrass band who tries to play it faster than the last time every time. They are having a special 25th Anniversary Reunion Concert in Cortland this Friday. Here is the blurb which also ends this email. Thanks for reading - Harvey

Friday night, Oct 20th, Delaney Brothers Bluegrass hosts its 25th birthday as a Central NY Bluegrass Band! All alumni of the band will be at the Homer NY Arts Center, Main St for an 8 pm show (beer, wine & desserts at 7). Check www.delaneybrothersbluegrass.com for further information. Tickets only $10; students: $5, under 12 free! 607-749-4900. Homer is north of Cortland NY and south of Syracuse right off I-81. WCNY-FM is taping the entire show for future broadcast on the "Bluegrass Ramble!"

Hey Folks,
I hope everyone had a great summer, as winter has certainly shown its face early this year. I know many of you, like me, were pretty busy this summer and are anxious to get back into some bluegrass jams this fall/winter. I just spoke to the activities coordinator up at Longview and we are all set for a jam this friday. The residents up there have been asking about us and are looking forward to having us back this winter for some live bluegrass entertainment. I am anxious to get back into it myself...I have to see if I can still remember how to do a roll. We've gotten lots of new names on the list as the summer has gone along, so for the folks who aren't familiar with where Longview is here are the details: When you come into Ithaca you are going to look for signs for 96B or Ithaca College. Drive up the hill on 96b, you'll see the main entrance for Ithaca College on your left and the entrance for Longview will be on your right about a half mile beyond that (coming from Candor area, Longview will be on your left side just before you come to the Ithaca College entrance). When you pull into the Longview driveway, go all the way to the end and you'll see a parking lot specifically for visitors. You'll see an obvious main entrance at the front of the building, go in the main entrance and go straight down the hallway. At the end of that hallway there is a large event room and we will be in there. I will try to have signs up in the halls so people don't get too lost. The jam is a very laid back informal jam open to all levels of players. Typically we sit in a circle and each person in the circle gets to take a turn to offer up a tune they'd like to play and the usually they kick it off to set the pace. This works great for everyone as everyone, at any level, gets to chose a tune they are familiar with and set a pace that is comfortable for them to play at....this allows everyone to have a good time. We are a beginner friendly jam, so for you shy folks that aren't sure whether you are "ready" or not, show up and see how it goes. Okay, so the jam starts at 6:00 pm this Friday and goes until about 8:30pm. We'll be meeting every other friday at Longview this winter. I hope to see you guys there and I know the residents are looking forward to it. Keep on pickin'!!! Rick

It is bluegrass pickin time again, and hopefully THIS week I should be able to make it...though I am very very rusty (my strings probably are as well).

The jam begins at 6:00 pm up at Longview on 96b just up the hill past Ithaca college.  It goes until about 8:30.

I managed to stop in for a minute at the last jam we had two weeks ago and notices some familiar faces, as well as a few new ones.

The list has grown significantly this summer and I've been forced to make two email lists, since hotmail only allows 50 people on a list....I believe we are up around 65-70 people on the list.

I hope to see some new and old faces tomorrow night.

Keep on pickin!!!
Rick
