PostPosted: Sun Sep 03, 2006 11:45 am    Post subject: Max Buckholtz bringing fiddle students 9/4 Reply with quote

Hi Friends,

We wanted to send out a reminder that Max Buckholtz is
bringing a small crowd of his fiddle students to the
Commons tomorrow night - warming them up for a performance
at the Newfield Fiddler's Fest (which happens Sept. 16).

Some of you will remember that Max showed up last Monday night
with a whole bunch of music. We don't expect that the 12/8 piece
(Dingle Regatta) will be played. Here's what Ted sent Max
as confirmation of what we can expect to be played and how:

======================================================
Max -

Just to confirm...

You're coming with students, and will expect to play
up to three sets:

1. John Ryan's Polka / The Plumbers Clog
2. Cripple Creek (or O'Keefes Slide) / Old Joe Clark
3. Spotted Pony (Reel) / Major Malley's March

Note that in #2, the slide should be played as
a jig 6/8, and it should almost certainly go
first. Changing from jig to reel works much
better than reel to jig.

YFN folks are familiar with John Ryan's and Old Joe Clark.
Your folks should be very strong on the Plumber's Clog,
Spotted Pony, and Major Malley's.

See 'ya Monday.
-ted crane

========================================================

Hopefully we'll all be on the same page, so to speak.
Thanks for your patience with this process.
Let's hope that future fiddlers will be developed out
of this meeting of the musicians.

See ya at the Pavillion,
Peace
-Pamela (for Ted who's out of town this weekend)

Tim Ball's 'Sage Hen Waltz' was a pleasure last night. Way to go Tim!

The Waltz for next week will be the traditional Irish tune "Inisheer", from Waltz Book III. Anna handed this one out at Mike L's jam Saturday. We played this through on Saturday and it is a beautiful tune, a "keeper". Mike L. will lead a practice tomorrow night (Wednesday) at his regular weekly jam. Here's the blurb from the Waltz Book III about "Inisheer"

"This tune is named after an island off the west coast of Ireland, and the word "inisheer' means "island" in Gaelic. We learned this lovely tune, which is sometimes played as a slow air, from Michael Kerry. It's one of his favorites , and he plays a beautiful rendition of it on his album, The Rocky Road, available from Michael at www.michaelkerry.com."

Hi Ted, Mike,

A yellow jacket was left at the Commons last night [Monday Sept 11], probably by one of the dancers. Smallish, likely a woman's jacket. I have it and I'm wondering the best way to get the word out. Didn't seem like there's a particular category on your forum that fits the bill, Mike. Is there a YFN list that one of you could put it on? If so, you can put my phone number in the note -- 272-6368.

Thanks,

Tom

From Tom F ....

Next week will be the last Monday night contra on the Commons for this year Sad. I've sure enjoyed it.
Kaaren Remley suggested for the final waltz that we play George Wilson's 'Henry's Good Fortune' from Waltz Book III.
Sorry I don't have any additional resources for it, but as always, this will practiced tonight at Mike's Canaan Rd. Wednesday jam. Enjoy!

Tom

First ever Canaan Rd "waltz jam" 7:30 - 9:30 pm Monday Nov 13th directions on the web site or email Mike. Short notice I know, but this is sort of in the planning stages and will give me and a couple other musicians I know something musical to do on Monday nights since the Monday nights on the commons is long over and Phil's guitar class just ended last week. Ideally I would love to do it every Monday, but realistically this won't work especially during the holidays - we have other projects going at Canaan Rd ... so I will anniunce it spontaneously as permitted. So the hope is to focus more on reels, jigs and the occasional song on wednesdays and save up the waltzes for the Mondays that are available. Also in the planning stage is the idea that folks come come and hang out and listen and waltx a little (but we won't have room for that aspect until after the holidays). Monday the 20th there is a YFN rehearsal (for DEC 2nd "gig") at Jennifer and Gail's so for sure no waltz jam that night see the forum thread http://canaaninstitute.org/mikesmusic/viewforum.php?f=6

From Ted:

YFN at Ithaca Festival ... and Mondays on the Commons
YFN is scheduled to play for dancing during the Ithaca Festival

Saturday, June 2, 12:00-1:00 (tune up at 11:45)
Ithaca Commons Aurora Street Pavilion

Quote:
This is listed in the Ithaca Festival Guide under "Tompkins County Country Dances" on page 69 with the band listings and also on page 40 with the schedule in the Aurora St - Local Rock Pavilon column! Smile

I hope you'll all be there, rain or shine!

I asked for the Aurora Street Pavilion in preference to
DeWitt Park. Past history is not always a good indicator
of future success, but I figured a lousy location where
there is a chance of an audience would be better than a
picturesque location with no audience and no rain cover.

To offer more opportunity for "watchers" to become "dancers",
we'll try to keep the dance sets short, probably 8-12 times
through. So expect to play 4-6 sets, plus a waltz.

The music will be acoustic. If history proves true, tunes
will be chosen by those present and played with great verve
and enthusiasm!

The Festival puts some emphasis on timely performances,
so please arrive early, like, 11:45pm, and meet behind
to the performance area. It might even be nice to arrive
a little /earlier/ and get together a quick marching band
come-on, circling from Aurora Street to the (idle at that
moment) Main Pavilion and back, between 11:55 and our Noon
starting time.

============================================================

As always, dancing on the Ithaca Commons starts the Monday
after the Festival. This year, June 4. I hope that a lot
of you will show up (and then again, every week)!!

Mondays, June..mid-Sept, 7:30pm-10pm
Ithaca Commons, Main Pavilion (in front of Center Ithaca)
Rain or shine, air conditioned by the great outdoors.

Typical format for an evening: 10-odd dance sets and
a waltz. Each set 10-12 times through, suitable for
two or three tunes.

Hope to see you'all frequently...and early!

Monday – 17 September 2007

LAST Outdoor Contra Dance – The 17th is the last Monday!! So we are having a little PARTY after the last dance: the folks at Letter’s Central Hots down around the corner on Cayuga Street (across the street from the Lost Dog) have agreed to stay open late just for us! Dancers and musicians: let’s meet there after the last Waltz! The menu is limited, but the space is nice; maybe we can jam a little? Smile

All summer long this has been happening: Dancers, come dance every Monday night from 7:30-10:00 pm on the Ithaca Commons Main Pavilion. Rain or Shine. Bring your friends; listen or dance – this is a nice venue for beginners because the sets are short and the dances are usually fairly simple and it has that casual outdoorsy atmosphere. Musicians: this is an open band; come and play with us or dance and play! Oh yeah and it’s FREE.

2008 season starts June 02 - 7:30 pm

We work form the "YFN tuneset" email Mike to get your copy! The tunes are common folk tunes and are easy to learn by ear. There is usually a music stand or 2 floating around at the pavilion so you can peek at the melody and guitar chords also ....

YFN Folk -

Grab your calendars and note the following:

June 2 - Monday - the first "Monday Nights in the Summer"
dance on the Ithaca Commons. 7:30-10pm. You're /the/
band for these events, so I hope you'll circle all the
Mondays on your calendar, until mid-September!

Yes, this is our traditional starting date. The first
Monday after the Ithaca Festival. What, they moved the
Festival? Sigh.

June 6 - Waltz Jam 6:45-8:00 pm Bethel Grove. Open band.

(updated)
June 6 - Friday - YFN invited to play for the Friday
night dance. 8-11pm, Bethel Grove Community Center,
1825 Slaterville Road (Rt.79, about 4 miles east of
the Commons). You can arrive early for the 7pm
Waltz Jam, too...play and/or dance!

June 14 - Saturday - here's a reminder about YFN at the
"Dryden Dairy Days". Officially 2-3pm; unofficially,
we can arrive early and play later. We've already had,
"I'll be there," notes from a few fiddlers...and I
hope to hear from you, too!

(updated)
June 21 - Saturday - we're on at our usual Ithaca Commons
location, the Main ("Bernie Milton") pavilion, from Noon
to 12:45. Please arrive about 11:45 for setup? Tell
your friends, too!
