From Natasha ...

What a year!

I am thrilled to announce the FINAL Popcorn Youth concert of 2008. It has been an exciting year for live music in Ithaca, and I couldn't be happier to present NMPERIGN — one of the most innovative, focused, and formidable improv duos around — in our last concert of the year. Local electronics improviser Aaron Phillip Tate will open the night with a solo set.

Thursday evening's concert will be FREE and open to the public. Think of it as my way of saying THANKS to loyal listeners and a way to entice new attendees, although donations for the touring musicians are always encouraged.

nmperign, named after the Latin phrase "ignotum per ignotius" meaning for "unknown through the more unknown," play precise but wildly unpredictable improvisations would have you at the edge of your seat if you weren't so afraid of the noise you would make getting there. Fierce and fragile, lush and fractured, nmperign is tough to pin down and all the better for it. Ithaca Experimental said this about Bhob Rainey's unique playing:

"Well known for his mastery of extended and microtonal techniques on the saxophone, but also for his remarkable conceptual discipline, Rainey's playing is only one part of a sonic story that includes scrapes, drone, clatter, and hum; and sounds equally as abstract (pure noise) at some points as they are concrete (breaking glass) at others. No matter how complex or beguiling the music may be, the working methods and impeccable standards of these two composers have guaranteed that every sound, smear, and breath have been placed where they occur for good reason — the pleasure on the listener's part is to unravel the mystery and intensity of the resulting sonic cartography."

Since their inception in 1998, the duo has performed at the Musique Action, Musique Innovatrices, Densites festivals in France, the Superfici Sonore festival in Italy, and the De Stijl and No Fun festivals in the US. Their recordings have been released by Twisted Village, Intransitive Recordings, American Tapes, Siwa, Rossbin (Italy), and Selektion (Germany). The duo has collaborated with Le Quan Ninh, Gunter Mueller, Jason Lescalleet, Jerome Noetinger, Lionel Marchetti, Gino Robair, Vic Rawlings, Mike Bullock, and many others.

"nmperign's music seems to unwind as two parallel soundtracks being put in line by a kind of Leibnizian god. The duo has a disturbing (turmoil) serenity; they seem to have been set up in this new monadology for an eternity. For me, there is nothing to be called 'minimal' in their music, in their choice of low and dangerously weak sounds. It would be nonsense to call this music 'minimal'; on the contrary, their way of making music refines our senses and gives precision to a double movement of internalization and openmindedness. So space is opened and landmarks disappear." Philippe Alen, Improjazz

"(nmperign's) attention to the architecture of improvisation, control over a huge palette of sonic material, and ability to explore the extremes of music-making with subtlety and wit mark them as two of the most original thinkers in free improvisation today." Ed Hazel, Boston Phoenix

You will NOT regret seeing these remarkable performers in a intimate, cozy local environment. Please come out and support Ithaca's underground music scene… we would love to see you there!!
