DELTA SPIRIT TO ROCK CASTAWAYS NEXT WEEK!
Rock and roll troublemakers DELTA SPIRIT will appear at Castaways on February 18th as part of their national tour supported by Other Lives and Dawes. Tickets are just $10 in advance and on sale now at dansmallspresents.com. Delta Spirit are in the midst of their first national headlining tour in support of their stellar debut album Ode to Sunshine. Recent live reviews are already citing them as a band that will be “huge in 2009”, don’t miss your chance to catch them before they explode!
Delta Spirit formed in 2005 in San Diego. After releasing their 6 song EP I Think I’ve Found It a year later, they were recruited to tour with such notable names in indie rock as Clap You Hands Say Yeah and Dr. Dog. They followed the EP with Ode to Sunshine self released in 2007. It was subsequently re-released in 2008 on Rounder Records (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Martha Wainwright, Ween). Rounder just released the single “Trashcan” in January in preparation for this tour. It has appeared on numerous top ten lists for 2008.
Ode to Sunshine continues to receive rave reviews from critics as more and more people get on board with the band. Popmatters likens them to “Will Sheff’s emotional delivery mixed with some surfer-folk-blues guitar riffs and spiritual lyrical undertones.” Live reviews have been nothing but complimentary as well. Stereogum writes, “The band is amazing (great players!). The songs are great - "Children" is revelatory. This band is going to be around for a very long time.” The Boston Globe adds, “Better than any young band in recent memory.” Delta Spirit kicked off this jaunt with an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Former busker Matt Vasquez, whose voice is soaked in tender blues and Americana, leads the band. Drawing comparisons to Springsteen, Vazquez brings a huge presence to the stage. Sean Walker joins him on characteristically jangly guitar along with multi-instrumentalist Kelly Winrich playing everything from trashcan to keyboards. Jon Jameson on bass and Brandon Young on drums fill out the rhythm section.
Other Lives is just weeks away from releasing their first full length on TBD records. Their successful blend of slow, shimmery folk rock is deeply infused with a nostalgic feeling for open prairies and wide night skies. Dawes rounds out the line up with their simple yet soaring backwoods melodies evocative of the Fleet Foxes. Dawes features two members of the band Simon Dawes who toured in support of Band of Horses, The Walkmen and many others.
