First Friday Chamber Music at CSMA Kicks Off the New Year
With Fiddling on Old-World Themes and Arabic Music on Jan 7 (2011)

A warm and invigorating New Year’s treat is guaranteed to all as the Community School of Music and Arts welcomes 2011 with music drawn from Arabia, Turkey, Armenia and Bulgaria .

CSMA’s monthly First Friday Chamber Music will feature “Fiddlers Three”, “Souk” and Thom Baker on Friday, Jan 7 at 8 pm in the 3rd Floor Performance Space.

“Fiddlers Three” features Tim Ball, Bill Hurley, and Joseph Prusch on violins and viola premiering three suites composed by Prusch based on folksongs and fiddle tunes from Bulgaria, the Rhine Valley, and Anatolia (Turkey and Armenia).

“Souk” is a classical Arabian ensemble featuring Prusch on keman (violin), Nikolai Ruskin on oud (lute), Dara Anisi on darbuka (goblet drum), and Jesse Koennecke on rik (tambourine).

Souk is also arranging a medieval troubadour piece to be sung by Thom Baker. They are modeling the arrangement after classical Arabic formal concepts, following the work of Dr. Thomas Binkley (Indiana/Bloomington), who argues that much of European secular music in the middle ages was imported from the Arabic world via the Spanish frontier. The troubadour piece is "A Chantar" by the Comtessa de Dia, one of the few troubadour compositions composed by a woman.

Admission is free, although an $8 donation is requested. CSMA is wheelchair accessible. First Friday Chamber Music concerts are sponsored by the Ithaca Sertoma Club.

A leader in community arts education and cultural programming for 50 years, CSMA offers year-round instruction in visual arts, music, dance, theatre, and language arts, and presents performances, gallery exhibitions, and events in its spacious downtown facility located one block east of the Ithaca Commons at 330 E. Martin Luther King Jr / State Street.

From Joseph Prusch:

To my fellow musicians and performers:

The Community School of Music and Art is in dire need of the public’s support at this time. I teach at the CSMA because I believe every human being - of any age, gender, ethnic background, and income level - deserves the opportunity to learn an instrument and to make music with others. My parents bent over backwards to give me the opportunity to play viola, including cooking meals for my private teacher when they could no longer afford to pay cash. But I believe all of us deserve the chance to study music with good teachers and pass on our heritage to future generations, not just those wealthy enough to afford such an education. The utopian society I know us humans can create is one in which all of us have a steady job where we work for 8 hours a day, sleep for 8 hours a day, and spend another 8 hours having fun dancing and writing, playing, and singing songs with and for one another, teaching our children the music of our past and encouraging them to create new music.

The CSMA makes such a future possible, but its mission has been seriously jeopardised by a nasty loophole in New York State law. An unexpected and costly elevator repair almost two years ago has steeply tilted the financial ship of the school, tying up our grants in the state legislature’s bureaucracy and forcing instructors to go over 18 months without steady compensation. This past November’s election handed control of the state senate to the Republicans, who have promised to cut spending on public education and the arts; and with the political hijinx of the past two-year session, we were lucky to see what grants we did.

Thom Baker, a voice teacher at the CSMA, has been managing a chamber music concert series on the first Fridays of each month to help bring in donations. Admission is free, but the faculty and our friends have put on some top-quality performances. But it has been extraordinarily tough to advertise to the public as we have no funds for advertising.

This Friday’s concert will feature two of my groups, Souk and the Fiddlers Three. We will pe playing Egyptian classical music, a new arrangement of a troubadour song (one of the few composed by a woman!) in Middle Eastern style, and then three new suites of fiddle tunes from Armenia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Germany, France, Holland, and Turkey. To boot, all three of us in the Fiddlers Three have studied the Irish Sligo style with local fiddler Eamon MacGowan, the lead fiddler in local Irish band Traonach. So at the very least, you’ll get to hear Bulgarian oros in Sligo style!

I know this is a difficult time for us all, but if every man, woman, and child residing in Tompkins County came to the CSMA on Friday night and pitched in a quarter, it would more than solve the school’s financial woes. (But how would we fit them all?) If every student at Cornell and Ithaca College were to donate a dollar, it would cover the elevator deficit and give us another $6,000 for the scholarship fund. If each of you can tell a friend, and you all come and make a donation of up to $8 (the suggested donation), we could cover a week’s overhead, which gives the school a little of breathing room. Most importantly, if you can’t make it but at least spread the word to your friends by mouth, we can increase awareness in the commmunity that this incredible resource exists, and that there is a great way for the average citizen to make a difference and keep it alive.

There is yet another way you all can help, even if you can’t show up in person. You can email Jim Catalano at arts@ithacatimes.com and let him know that you support the CSMA’s efforts and would like to see more coverage of the situation in the Ithaca Times. If he gets an overwhelming number of one-line emails with that request, we can persuade him that the issue is important enough to be covered over the next few months. The school belongs to the community, but unless the community helps out, I fear our school will be lost.

Thank you all for reading this, and a Happy New Year to all of you.

Joseph Prusch

First Friday Chamber Music

'Dvorak in the New World'

Fri Feb 3 @ 8 pm
3rd Floor Performance Space
Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA)
330 E. Martin Luther King Jr. / State St.
Ithaca, NY

Featuring musicians:

Angela Comprone, violin
Timothy Ball, violin
Jaime Kibbelsbeck, viola
Joseph Prusch, viola
Diana Geiger, cello

playing selections from:

Op. 75a "Drobnosti" (trio)
Op. 96 "American" (quartet #12)
Op. 97 "American" (quintet #3)

In honor of the 120th anniversary of Dvorak's arrival in America, CSMA is proud to present a chamber music concert of works Dvorak composed in America, with a special emphasis on Dvorak's own instrument, the viola.

The "American" quartet is well known, but much more rarely performed is Dvorak's wonderful 'American" quintet, scored for two violas. The Drobnosti trio was began before Dvorak's American sojourn and finished after, but the composer actually suppressed it during his lifetime. It was first performed in 1938, after being discovered in Dvorak's notes. It is heavily influenced by American idioms.

Both violists are members of CSMA's private instruction faculty; all five have been affiliated with Ithaca College. Violinist Comprone plays with the alt-country band "Not from Wisconsin"; Ball is familiar to followers of Traonach, while cellist Geiger is the new director of the Ithaca Community Orchestra.

An $8 donation is suggested at the door (no one turned away). Donations support CSMA's educational programs and scholarships.

Joni Mitchell Tribute Returns to CSMA Saturday February 18

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee and eight time Grammy winner, including for Lifetime Achievement, folk and jazz artist extraordinaire Joni Mitchell may have officially retired from the music biz to pursue life as a painter, but her legions of fans and artists influenced by her are unending.

Downtown Ithaca’s Community School of Music and Arts is proud to announce the 3rd Annual Joni Mitchell Tribute, to be held in the 3rd Floor Performance Space, Saturday, February 18 from 7 to 10 pm. A donation of $10 is requested to benefit CSMA’s educational programs and scholarships.

Organizer Joe Gaylord promises a delightful evening of covers and interpretations of Joni’s vast repertoire, featuring a number of folk, jazz and other musicians from Ithaca and beyond. A raffle of rare Joni recordings will also be held. Teachers visiting for Ithaca’s Winter Recess who attend the concert will receive a free raffle ticket!

“It’s the perfect way to wind up a day downtown after the 14th Annual Great Chili Cook-off, and to celebrate Winter Recess” says Gaylord.

Scheduled artists include: Amelia Burns, Janet Cotraccia, Joe Gaylord, Mary Kane, Colleen Kattau & Some Guys, Jody Kessler, Ron Kristy, Erika Lundahl, Susan Lytle, Molly Macmillan, Sue Tierney McNamara, Eric Miller & Christine Evans, New Roots Chorus, Tom Peters & Ben Wells, Joe Ryan & Bev Fitzpatrick, Susan Terwilliger, and Maggie Whitehead.

Seeking Balance. Recent Works by Marian Van Soest

Abstract paintings in oil, ink, and watercolor by Marian Van Soest. When retirement loomed, Van Soest took up painting as a way of assuring creative engagement for as long as possible. She says of her paintings, “I especially enjoy working with color, line, and shape to produce good design. My work has gradually become more abstract as I probe more deeply into what keeps art, and life, in balance.”

Ithaca Children’s Choir Spring Concert Remembers Jack Gallagher

The Ithaca Children’s Choir will hold its annual spring concert in the Ford Hall Auditorium in the Whalen Center for Music on the Ithaca College Campus on Tuesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will be called “Remember.” The Chorale will sing a piece called “remember” written by Jack Gallagher and arranged by Sarah Beckwith. The members of the Ithaca Children’s Choir remember the powerful presence of this extraordinary young man who would have been graduating from high school this spring. There are many seniors in ICC, and they have chosen to sing this piece in celebration of Jack’s life.

Tickets are $6 each or $20 for a family of four or more, and are available at CSMA and at the door.

The Chorale will also be singing “Adiemus,” one of the favorite pieces from past years. Juniors and seniors will be singing “Faithful Over a Few Things.” The rest of the program will include selections from a wide variety of genres and styles, including the Young Men’s performance of “Libertatum,” a composition that the ensemble sang at the premiere performance in New York City several years ago.

A program of the Community School of Music and Arts, the Ithaca Children’s Choir is completing its 26th year under the artistic direction of Janet Galván. This ensemble has been dedicated to multicultural music from its beginnings. One of the missions of the ensemble has been to build bridges of understanding through music and to try to create communication with people throughout the community. Earlier this year the Ithaca Children’s Choir sang in the Community concert, “Sing A New Song.”

Galván states that “The members of this ensemble have always come from many different schools throughout the community and as far away as Pennsylvania. Many lasting friendships have grown through their weekly rehearsals for many years. Many of the students who go on to college (whether music majors or not) sing leading roles in musicals and are accepted into the most advanced college and university ensembles. The students learn skills that they can use for the rest of their lives, but most importantly, they find the joy of singing with others to create something beautiful.”

The Children’s Choir is also one of a very few choirs throughout the nation chosen to participate in “Radio Radiance,” broadcasting a performance of new works on national public radio.

Galván adds, “There is a place for every child who wants to sing.” At the concert, the audience will hear the Training Choir, the Senior Choir, the Choraliers, the Chorale, and the Young Men of Ithaca Chorus. Ages range from 7 years old to 19.

Dr. Galván is one of the nation’s leading conductors of singers of all ages. Recently, she conducted a master class for conductors at the National Conference for Children’s Choir Directors. She also conducted festivals in North Carolina, Hawaii, New Jersey, Nevada, California, Connecticut, California, Georgia, and New York. She was on the conducting faculty of the Carnegie Hall Workshop, Transient Glory.

A leader in community arts education and cultural programming for over 50 years, CSMA offers year-round instruction in visual arts, music, dance, theatre, and language arts, and presents performances, gallery exhibitions, and events in its spacious downtown facility located one block east of the Ithaca Commons at 330 E. Martin Luther King Jr. / State Street.

"The Duties and Philosophies of Thirteen Trees"

Greetings Friends, Family, Colleagues, Students, and Acquaintances,

Some of you may recall that I wrote last year around this time with a request. The Community School of Music and Arts in Ithaca that has been my teaching home for some years now is once again hosting the Arts for All Marathon.

I took it as an opportunity last year to step from behind the violin, and write poetry, which has been an avocation of mine for most of my life.
Last year, it wound up being a year for Haiku. ......27 Haiku. (One for each day of the Marathon).

This year, not Haiku. This year:
"The Duties and Philosophies of Thirteen Trees"
These are short poems reflecting various views of the trees of this part of New York.
A friend and colleague at the school, Greg Tomezsko will be illustrating. He teaches anatomical drawing here, and is a very fine painter.

I invite any or all of you to contribute whatever amount seems appropriate. This is the website: http://artsforallmarathon.org/donate.php
Much like last year, I'll be sending out the completed project at the beginning of November. I'm not sure whether it will be by email or in print. This has yet to be determined, but if you have a preference, please do let me know. Please also reference my name in the memo area of the donation, or send me an email to let me know you've donated. Otherwise, I'll not know that I should send you poetry.

I thank you all very much for your attention, and your support,

Bill Hurley

CSMA Launches Sunday Concert Series with April 14 and May 5 Offerings

The Community School of Music and Arts in downtown Ithaca greets the spring with music, as it launches its brand new series of CSMA Sunday Concerts, sponsored by the Ithaca Sertoma Club.

On Sunday, April 14 at 2 pm, CSMA faculty members William Hurley, Christopher Morgan Loy, and Matthew Ocone join forces to present music of Schubert, Tchaikovsky, and de Falla, as well as Christopher Morgan Loy.

Loy will play three of his own works for piano: Voices of the Woods; In Memorium: Jamie Cannon and Homage to Steven Stucky. Hurley (violin) & Loy join forces for Schubert’s Sonatina in G Minor. Hurley and Ocone will play the Canzonetta from Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto as arranged for violin and guitar by Allen Krantz plus selected songs from Sept Chanson Populaires Espagnols by Manuel de Falla. Donation requested at the door.

Three weeks later, Sunday May 5 at 2 pm, the Fingerlakes Flutes will play their Spring Concert at CSMA as a special benefit for the school. This professional flute choir features seven flautists on a variety of flutes. Their program includes works by Mozart, Debussy, Bartok and more. As a tribute to Cinqo de Mayo, they also will play Caliendo’s La Milonga. And as a special highlight, a flute choir version of Mussogorsky’s ever-popular Pictures at An Exhibition. Tickets for this special concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

A leader in community arts education and cultural programming for over 50 years, CSMA offers year-round instruction in visual arts, music, dance, theatre, film, and language arts, as well as presenting performances, gallery exhibitions, and events in their spacious downtown facility located one block east of the Ithaca Commons.
