MORE INFORMATION About Contra Dancing:

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST DANCE Contra dancing is easy to learn. It’s so easy to learn that you don’t take lessons. Just show up at a dance and by the end of the first night you’ll have learned all the dance moves and you will be able to enjoy the next dance even more. People are friendly and welcoming to beginners. The age range is from kids to folks that have been around for a while. Both singles and doubles come to contra dances and women as well as men ask people to dance. It is usual that you change partners after every dance. You will meet people in a relaxed, pleasant, smoke and alcohol free atmosphere. The patterns of the dance can be a tad confusing at first but remember everyone had a first time and that other dancers will help you. Listen to the caller and the music and go with the flow of the dance. Some people find they get dizzy at first. Looking directly at the person you are dancing with eliminates this sensation. For many, the music is what keeps them coming back as it is exciting and lively. People come to dance, hear the music, socialize and have a good time.

WHAT TO WEAR? Wear smooth soled shoes and comfortable light weight clothing. Some halls require non-street shoes so make sure the soles of shoes aren’t bringing grit onto the dance floor. Most people bring a bottle of drinking water. Contra dancing is joyous so it’s important that you bring a smile. Adapted from http://www.greatmeadowmusic.com/music.html

SALT CITY — “Just after the Revolutionary War, more settlers came to the area, mostly to trade with the Onondaga Nation. Ephraim Webster left the Continental Army to settle in 1784, and Asa Danforth, another revolutionary war hero, and Comfort Tyler, whose engineering skill contributed to regional development, arrived four years later. All three settled in Onondaga Hollow south of the present city center, which was then marshy. Salt was discovered in several swamps in Syracuse, which brought more settlers to the area, and eventually gave the city the nickname “Salt City”.” source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syracuse,_New_York

Sun Dec 12    Myra Kovary is performing the Benjamin Britten Ceremony of Carols at the First Presbyterian Church in Ithaca on Sunday morning, December 12, 2010 at 10 am.  The piece is a beautiful work for harp and choir written in 1943.  The carols are not at all the traditional Christmas carols.  She often plays in orchestra where the harp is only a small part of the ensemble.  In the Britten, the harp is the only instrument accompanying the choir and there is also a solo harp Interlude — so, you’ll really be able to hear the harp!  The performance is part of the regular church service and is free and open to the public.  The First Presbyterian Church is at the corner of Court and Cayuga Streets in Ithaca. www.myrakovary.com

ATTENTION: Musicians! Send me your gigs! Guidelines http://canaaninstitute.org/mn/musicnt.htm#listings — HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART — if you want to get the word out, the earlier you send me the gig, the more web coverage it gets. Increasingly folks (non-subscribers) are commenting that they get their information about what is happening from my web-pages and not from the emails (this is disappointing to me, but true), The number of readers on the email is in the hundreds while the number of readers (web clicks or hits) is in the many thousands per week. I only update the events grid once per week! Send them early! If you send the listings last minute, your news is missing a large part of the music news hungry audience :-)

UNSUBSCRIBE — Send email to Mikes-Music-request@icycle.org?subject=unsubscribe (with the word “unsubscribe” in the subject line) ==OR== you can simply email Mike (reply to this message) at michael.ludgate@gmail.com anytime. PLEASE never use the “spam” button to get off ANY list: that is poor e-etiquette it causes more problems for the administrator of the list AND other subscribers AND for yourself. Take the time to properly unsubscribe. Please tell me which list: I have five! Thanks! :-)

DIGEST MODE — Not recommended for this list [Mikes-Music]. The digest mode is really only useful on busier list-serves. Since I usually only send one message per day, it will not change your email volume as the digest is also one message per day. The non-digest version is easier to read because it includes HTML formatting and the wider screen of text.

Thanks for reading,
Mike :-)

Réveillons, mes amis! Wake up! Spring is upon us, and here is a springing opportunity to spend an afternoon and evening in the company of some effervescent French Canadian musicians. Réveillons wowed the crowds at last year’s Dance Flurry with irresistible music and brisk, jolly (et jolie) dances, both familiar and with some fresh twists. Let’s greet their debut in Ithaca with a rousing response.

This multi-talented quartet from Québec features energetic rhythms and imaginative interpretations of traditional French Canadian tunes. And joie de vivre above all! They take pride in being both audacious and authentic. Réveillons includes David Berthiaume (voice, jaw harp, concertina), Jean-François Berthiaume (stepdance, bodhran, foot percussion, suitcase, voice), Richard Forest (swinging fiddle), and Marc Maziade (guitar, tenor banjo, voice, infused with jazz, blues, and Flamenco). Ithaca’s Katy Heine will be calling contras in style, and Jean-Francois Berthiaume, one of Québec’s stellar callers, will intersperse some French Canadian squares.

For dancers who are wondering about the Hands Four “Fiddlehead Frolic,” it will return next April. Meanwhile, consider April 10 a “Fiddle and Frolic” event that spans four workshops from 2:30 to 6:00 pm, a potluck supper, and dancing from 7:45-11 pm, all at Boynton Middle School.

Réveillons afternoon workshops are: fiddle with Richard Forest (2:30-4:00); step-dancing (2:30-4:00) and Quebecois social dance (4:30-6:00) with Jean-Francois Berthiaume; and the history of Quebecois music (4:30-6:00) with David Berthiaume. Workshops are $15 each or two for $25. Participation is limited, so register early by contacting Laura Taylor at LBT1@cornell.edu.

Beginners are welcome (simple steps taught at 7:45 pm). No need to bring a partner, but please bring clean, soft-soled shoes and something yummy to share for the potluck supper. Dance admission: $9 for HFDI members, $12 for nonmembers. Info: 607-539-3174 or www.hands4dancers.org

The O’Shanigans perform Celtic and American Fiddle tunes suitable for general entertainment and contra dances. We currently combine the O'Shanigans at the ITE Suzuki Summer Session at Ithaca College 2009skills of two of Ithaca’s most experienced open music jam leaders with an incredibly talented young fiddler. We have our own sound gear and a publicity network to help gain attention for your event. The O’Shanigans is: Phil Robinson on guitar (Ithaca Bluegrass jam leader, multi-instrumentalist), Tim Ball on fiddle (Contrapasso, Tunescape, IC violinist and etc) and Michael Ludgate on mandolin (Canaan jam leader, waltz jam originator, CMEMME member and etc). We may substitute other well qualified musicians if any of these members are not available for a particular event.

The band O’Shanigans was originally formed by Phil Robinson to fill a fun gig for Saint Patrick’s Day in March of 2009. The original members shift and change a bit, but Phil and Mike are usually at the core. Yes, you guessed the name was coined as a spin off on the word shenanigans and that first Irish gig! We have not lost our sense of humor even when we hit a few bumps in the road! Our email address is oshanigans@canaaninstitute.org Our web page is here  http://www.canaaninstitute.org/oshanigans.html

Come on out to and Old Time and Cajun Dance Night and dance to incredible Old Time Music of Pearls and Swine (Hogwashers and Pearly Snaps) and for an hour in the middle of the evening wonderful Cajun music by Bayou Road Krewe headed by the fabulous fiddling of Susi Mills!

Old Time Square Dance Night this Saturday, November 15 , 2008 starting at 7:30 pm. Music by Pearls and Swine (Steve Selin, Joe Damiano, Jason Zorn, Rosie Newton and Stephanie Jenkins) with Bayou Road Krewe playing Cajun tunes for an hour in the middle for your listening, waltzing and two stepping pleasure. Dance caller: Nancy Spero Come to dance or listen! Location: Close Hall, 8 miles north of Ithaca on Route 96 in Jacksonville NY $7 suggested donation, beginners welcome, no partner needed. For more information, contact Nancy Spero 273-6603 or Steve Selin 272-9862

These dances have been happening for a while as you can tell by perusing the forum thread here http://canaaninstitute.org/mikesmusic/viewtopic.php?t=383. There you will see this nice little write up from local fiddler Steve Selin: “If you haven’t been to one of the dances I figured I’d describe it a bit. The BYOB dance is set in an old Grange hall built some time (guessing…) about 100 years ago. Upstairs the second-floor was made for dance parties – wood floor, little stage, low light. It’s cozy. We put together a band of musicians to play fiddle tunes, and old-time country songs. Some for listening, or 2-stepping or waltzing or whatever you want to do. The fiddle tunes propel the square dances that Nancy calls (small groups of 8 people, following figures that are shouted out). Even if you’ve never danced or think square dancing is something better left to elementary school gym class, you might just realize that it’s a ton of fun.”
