The Hold Steady, Felice Brothers, Deer Tick and more live at Stewart Park in Ithaca September 6th

ITHACA NY — Dan Smalls Presents in association with Ithaca Beer is proud to present a daylong festival of rising national talent in Ithaca’s Stewart Park “The Positive Jam”on Sunday September 6th. The Hold Steady, Felice Brothers and Deer Tick will appear in addition to much more throughout the day. The event is the follow-up to Ithaca Beer’s 3rd annual Brewfest that occurs on Saturday, September 5th, also in Stewart Park. The Brewfest is for ages 21 and up, Sunday’s concert is ALL AGES and gates will open at noon.

The Hold Steady recently played Ithaca in your traditional underplay (a smaller than usual venue) - selling out Castaways (400) in advance. Over a hundred were turned away at the door and this occurred in June without a student presence in town. They spent the better part of June opening for Dave Matthews in arenas and sheds across the northeast. The band is often described as a modern day Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - combining incredible lyrics, unmatched rhythm and perfect songwriting into a potent mix that has steadily rocketed their popularity to a fever pitch. Since their first album in 2004, The Hold Steady has been making more and more noise in the rock and roll world. Dubbed numerous times “America’s best bar band”, as they say - you better grab your beer and get ready for that toast to St. Joe Strummer. Seeing them is like going to a party with all of your best friends you don’t even know yet. Craig Finn dances across the stage with his boyish grin and knowing stare, chanting his gospel gathered from bar talk. Franz Nicolay, the multi talented keyboardist who sports a killer moustache, is always dressed impeccably as he tickles his keys with joy. Tad Kubler strokes out classic guitar solos with every song. Galen Polivka thumps out the bass lines with a relaxed rock slouch while Bobby Drake does an excellent, and often underappreciated, job banging (camp) out the beat.

The Felice Brothers also sold out Castaways for their second straight time this past spring. Their rootsy, backwoods Americana beat tears off the roof anywhere they play. Hailing from the rich musical heritage of the Catskills and the town of Husdon, NY, the Felice Brothers bring the folk revival in the spirit of bands like the Avett Brothers and Ryan Adams and the Cardinals. Last year was huge for the band. They released their brilliant self-titled record in March to wide acclaim after landing a record deal with Team Love records, owned by Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. Turns out he liked them so much, he took them on tour with Bright Eyes as well! They played major festivals like Bonnaroo, All Points West, The Philadelphia Folk Festival, Mountain Jam, and the one and only Newport Folk Festival. Due to high winds and torrential rains, the power was cut off during the Newport festival. The band played unplugged for over an hour leading the enthralled crowd in sing-a-longs to favorites like “Frankie’s Gun” and Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” and dancing with them in the mud.

Hot off the recent release of their impressive second album, Born on Flag Day, Deer Tick are a tornado of tumbleweeds and desert howls. Led by the weathered voice of John Joseph McCauley III who toured as a solo act under the same name before gathering the band, Deer Tick have built their name with music primarily based in folk and country with a dash of grunge. McCauley’s voice is easily the most distinctive aspect of their sound, at times clear and brittle while maintaining undertones of healthy buzzing. Filling out the band are players Christopher Ryan, Dennis Ryan, and Andrew Tobiassen. They were featured on NBC Anchor Brian Williams’ inaugural music-only web feature “BriTunes” in May 2009 leading up to the album release. Garnering healthy buzz at this year’s SXSW Festival and recently selling out a two night stand at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, 2009 is the year of the Deer(tick)

A recent signing to Saddle Creek, The Rural Alberta Advantage are an exciting new talent. Rereleasing their debut album Hometowns on June 30, the Canadian trio earned quick and apt comparisons to Arcade Fire and even Neutral Milk Hotel. One of the best albums to listen to while walking, Hometowns has it all. From the simple, aching heart of “Don’t Haunt This Place” to the maximal, horn rocker “Luciana” to the melodic sorrow of “The Air”, Hometowns is an ode to loves won and lost woven around vivid pictures of the bridges, forests and trails of rural Alberta. After a long year of underground success, the band caught the ear of many at this year’s SXSW festival due to a stirring performance opening for Grizzly Bear in the Central Presbyterian Church. Led by Nils Edenloff’s songwriting, the RAA is at it’s best when he sings a duet with Amy Cole who fills in keyboards and assorted persussion. Paul Banwatt provides some of the most inspired drumming of the year, giving the drums a voice in the overall melodic texture.

I am ALWAYS happy to list gigs and open music events on my newsletter and calendar. Here is what I ask for (well … in an ideal world): Please include band or group name, venue name, time of event, street address, city, zipcode, web address (URL) for your group if available, URL for the venue if available, phone number or email address for venue or group contact is a good idea also. To gain maximum web coverage for your event send it to me 2-3 WEEKS in advance. If you include a plain text press release, I will post that on the web and link to it in the calendar listing and newsletter. ALSO it is really helpful NOT to send gig listings to me or to anyone in first person. Don’t say “I” or “Me” or “yours truly” … use your full name as if someone else were listing it, then it is easier for me and your other friends to pass the information along clearly. Thanks! :-)

UNSUBSCRIBE — Send email to Mikes-Music-request@icycle.org?subject=unsubscribe (with the word “unsubscribe” in the subject line) -OR- you can simply email Mike (reply to this message) at michael.ludgate@gmail.com anytime. PLEASE never use the “spam” button to get off ANY list … That is “poor e-etiquette” it causes more problems for the administrator of the list AND other subscribers AND for yourself. Take the time to properly unsubscribe :-)

Vibrant Labor Day Weekend Festival Celebrates Live Bluegrass and Roots Music, Promotes Solar Energy

Ontario, New York, September 5, 2009 – An 11 acre Christmas tree and fruit farm with bucolic views of 19th century red barns is the backdrop for this all-day live music event located about twelve miles east of Rochester. The Ontario Barn Festival combines live bluegrass and roots music with outdoor BBQ, arts & crafts, apple picking and other activities. The festival is nonprofit, promoting solar energy.

“The Ontario Barn Festival is the only music festival in the state that promotes the use of solar energy,”  said Chris Schaefer of Solar and Wind FX of Canandaigua, New York. The festival aims to facilitate networking between solar vendors, builders and most importantly would-be consumers interested in incorporating solar energy into their homes.

The scheduled bands include the Atkinson Family Band, well known in New York state and national bluegrass circles, along with York Pennsylvania’s Waitin’ on a Train and others. The show contains an ample dose of bluegrass for the most serious of fans. Yet the Ontario Barn Festival avoids being pegged as purely bluegrass by bringing forth dashes of eclecticism with youthful electric ensembles and the funk / klezmer / pop of Rochester’s Hypnotic Clambake.

The Ontario Barn Festival will take place on Saturday September 5th from 11 am to 7 pm at 513 Whitney Road in Ontario, New York. For more information, including directions, admission, sponsorship and band details, see the festival’s website: http://www.ontariobarnfestival.com/

“How does it feel - to be on your own - with no direction home - a complete unknown - like a rolling stone ?”

Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighbourhood.

Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood.

A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday.

“I don’t think she was familiar with his entire body of work,” Woolley said.

The incident began at 5 p.m. when a resident said a man was wandering around a low-income, predominantly minority neighbourhood several blocks from the oceanfront looking at houses.

The police officer drove up to Dylan, who was wearing a blue jacket, and asked him his name. According to Woolley, the following exchange ensued:

“What is your name, sir?” the officer asked.

“Bob Dylan,” Dylan said.

“OK, what are you doing here?” the officer asked.

“I’m on tour,” the singer replied.

A second officer, also in his 20s, responded to assist the first officer. He, too, apparently was unfamiliar with Dylan, Woolley said.

The officers asked Dylan for identification. The singer of such classics as “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Blowin’ in the Wind” said he didn’t have any ID with him, that he was just walking around looking at houses to pass some time before that night’s show.

The officers asked Dylan, 68, to accompany them back to the Ocean Place Resort where the performers were staying. Once there, tour staff vouched for Dylan.

The officers thanked him for his cooperation.

“He couldn’t have been any nicer to them,” Woolley added.

How did it feel? A Dylan publicist did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.

So I walked into The Shop in June, happy that I would finally be seeing Snip Das! (as this was their CD release show), readying myself for a great set from them and Why The Wires.  Oh yeah, some other guy was set to play.  What I didn’t expect to see was a cello hooked up to a loop pedal (as well as others), a banjo laying on an amp, a single mic stand and a well dressed man talking to folks at The Shop.  Well turns out this “some other guy” who I’d never heard of was Christopher Bell and he was about to blow me away with folksy and witty one-man tunes .  He surely filled the air with sound, playing the cello every way you can (bowed, plucked strummed, slapped, etc), looping it, switching to banjo, and singing clever lyrics over all of this – sometimes all of this in the same tune.  After the show we got talking and it turned out his friends June Madrona were going to be touring in August and needed a show in the area.  Done and done!!
